Engine temp sensor help
« on: June 03, 2025, 08:26:10 PM »
Hi all.
My car had the high temp light flashing, then staying on. Then the engine fault light came on. Took it to garage. It's a P0117 code. Mechanic says it needs a new sensor. They tried to order an OEM one but couldn't find one anywhere. The only option was an official Honda one at £104.00 plus vat. He asked me to go off and see if maybe I could source one myself?
This was his description of what is needed. Please can someone assist me tracing this?

"Screw in sensor. Light brown connector, sits in thermos housing".

I have a brand-new OEM radiator fan switch available if you're still interested. I originally purchased it a few years ago from GSF Car Parts for my 2007 Honda Jazz, but it turned out that the actual issue was a radiator-related airlock, so the part was never used. At the time, it cost around £15.

This switch is designed to activate the cooling fans, but if the fans are already running and the warning light remains on, the problem may stem from a different issue.

Before you spend money on a sensor replacement, it would be well worth while to check that the sensor really is the problem.

The Jazz doesn't have a dash temperature gauge to show the temperature, but, the engine temperature can easily be read by plugging in a cheap, readily available OBD2 reader (£10 ish) into the diagnostic port  which will be able to show you the temperature that the ECU is actually reading from the sensor.

After a night not running, it should show pretty much ambient temperature, then start the car, watch it rise and just see what happens.

If it looks OK but the fan isn't running, then suspect the fan temperature switch, and if the fan is running, look for other reasons such as a lack of coolant etc. Also, if the car has air conditioning, turning that on will cause both fans to operate to check that the fans are OK.

There are good vehicle technicians and there are also plenty of not so good ones ........

Having said that, there are lots of coolant temperature sensors on Autodoc. I'd go for the Febi one at around a tenner ....
