First service query
« on: June 13, 2023, 06:54:47 PM »
Today I had my 2022 model serviced at the 12 month point (3500 miles) at a main dealership.   I discussed what was going to be done before leaving the car and it amounted to an engine oil change with a visual inspection of hoses, brake pads and tyres as the main items to be looked at.  I expected the oil filter to stay on the car and be changed at the second service next year.

I asked about changing the cabin pollen filter and was told that it was a two-yearly change item.  Something didn't sound right to me and on returning home I checked my Owner's Guide, page 307.  I have a UK spec car.

When any of you have had your first service, have you had your own pollen filter changed or have you been told similar?  My interpretation is that it should have been changed.  Just curious about what others have experienced before I go back to the dealership with the book to have a chat about this.

According to Honda servicing schedules the pollen filter is replaced every TWO years and the oil Filter EVERY year. (There is absolutely no point on changing the engine oil and leaving the mucky old filter in situ to contaminate the nice new oil! Logical really.)

Just a personal opinion as an ex SHELL Automotive Lubricants specialist..........
If I kept my cars for many years (I tend to change annually and never keep a car over 3 years old) I would change oil and filter every 6,000 miles NOT 12,000
I know engine oils have improved since my days, but I still think 12,000 is too much.

@Karoq
Page 306 of the Owner's Guide definitely states the oil filter (normal conditions) is changed "Every 20,000km (12,500 miles) or 2 years".  Despite what logic may dictate, that's black and white in the book.

My query was specifically for the pollen filter.  Could you give your reference for the 2-yearly change of this please?

I replaced the pollen filter (also known as the "cabin air filter") myself after 16 months.
This was because my wife is allergic to things like privet and she was complaining when we drove past thickets of privet.
I found a video on YouTube that showed me how to swing down the lower front dash glove box in a recent (2018?) Honda Jazz/Fit so I could pull out the existing filter (NB: make a note of which way the air flow arrow is pointing), took it down to our local auto bits & pieces shop (Repco in New Zealand), showed it to the guy behind the counter and he went and got the generic replacement. Took it home and installed it (with the air flow arrow pointing in the right direction), pushed lower front dash glove box back into place.
Quite a difference, diesel trucks no where as smelly, happy wife as her allergies were not being triggered.
So I think that the frequency of changing the cabin air filter depends on your local driving conditions - 2 years is a default recommendation.

On my previous cars the pollen filter used to be replaced annually and I thought that was standard.

I was very surprised on my 9G Civic when I got a call asking if I could give approval for the filter to be replaced as it was well past it's best. That was on it's 7 year service but only on about 20k miles.

I assume it's not a Honda regular service item.
Let's be careful out there !

The Honda standard service checklist shows engine oil + filter every 12,500 miles / year and the pollen filter every 25,000 miles / 2 years. My dealer always gives me a filled in copy of the checklist with each service so I can see what should have been done and whether there's a tick in the box (which isn't proof it was done!).

From the tone of the call it was certainly more than 2 years old.

Maybe my low mileage prompted them to miss it out.

As I've got a service plan then I expect everything to be done according to the book. It's possible that if the customers are paying then dealers may decide that something that is scheduled isn't necessary due to low mileage (eg the pollen filter is still clean). However, this should be marked on the service checklist. Within the warranty period it's advisable that servicing of the mechanical components is carried out in accordance with Honda's recommendations.

Fully agree. At the time, my 9G Civic, I was paying and I was only doing about 2k miles a year.
