Back in 1980 I worked at a Burmah (remember them) petrol station. It was  attended service so I had to pupil fuel, take the money, run the shop and take delivery of fuel from the tankers. There might have been 5000 gallons of 4 star, 2500 gallons of 2 star and the same of diesel. So as a 20 year old lad I would be signing for the delivery of maybe £5000 worth of fuel, which is probably £25000 or so these days. You had to get up on the top of the tanker, in all weathers, and use a huge dipstick to measure the tank contents before and after delivery. The whole process used to take around 30 minutes.
