Immobiliser activated after getting new key barrels
« on: February 05, 2016, 08:05:52 AM »
As with many Jazz owners, one by one our key barrels stopped working until both doors and boot locks eventually stopped working. Contacted Honda who ordered two new door barrels which we picked up yesterday. We haven't fitted the new barrels yet, but when we tried to start the car this morning it won't start with either the old or the new keys.
Does the ECU need to be reprogrammed? Or is it the keys which need to be done? Anyone got any idea? We are about half an hour drive away from Honda with a car which we can't use to get there.
Any help appreciated.

BTW it isn't remote locking, and is a Jazz 1.2 2006.

Just spoke to Honda. They say that the new key is a dummy and we should get the car recovered to them and they will charge us to diagnose the problem. Great.

Only ever bought new barrels once and that was because the car had different locks  for boot/doors.
Always kept them well  oiled with WD 40.

If you have not changed the barrels yet then surely the original keys should still work.

Within the key is a small coded ID46 transponder chip which is read when the key is inserted in the ignition; there is a circular reader around the barrel on the steering column. An auto electrician / some one with HDS software / or Honda themselves can program the immobiliser/ECU to accept the code from a new transponder in a key.

If the steering column barrel is not being replaced then I can't see why the original key won't work to start the car. Your existing keys should still work until new codes are added to the car's ECU and the old codes are bumped out or deleted. It is possible to swap the transponder between keys, but they can sometimes slightly differ between styles of key.

It seems to me you will have a door key, and an ignition key. Some on here with failing door barrels just stick to remote (un)locking, it's quite easy to add a unit with fobs to control the central locking. (Amazon/eBay 'keyless entry kit')

Seeing as these new door locks have not been fitted yet, and no re-programming has been done either, has the battery gone flat?

Edit: One extra thought, if the new key has a transponder, is it near the barrel when starting the car so being accidentally read or interfering with the existing one?  A friend had his & hers BMWs which were a bit picky with both keys on the same ring.

Travelling auto locksmith may be the most economic solution if you are in a city.

The remote locking and immobiliser are two separate things, programming the remote is a separate (and easy) thing.

Thanks all for the helpful suggestions. Turns out that by a very weird coincidence that the ignition barrel decided to seize about 12 hours after getting the new door barrels and key. Honda quoted £470+ for the part alone but we have managed to find someone who is going to replace the lock and ignition barrels for about £150.
Hopefully that will do the trick.
