Within the key is a small coded ID46 transponder chip which is read when the key is inserted in the ignition; there is a circular reader around the barrel on the steering column. An auto electrician / some one with HDS software / or Honda themselves can program the immobiliser/ECU to accept the code from a new transponder in a key.
If the steering column barrel is not being replaced then I can't see why the original key won't work to start the car. Your
existing keys should still work until new codes are added to the car's ECU and the old codes are bumped out or deleted. It is possible to swap the transponder between keys, but they can sometimes slightly differ between styles of key.
It seems to me you will have a door key, and an ignition key. Some on here with failing door barrels just stick to remote (un)locking, it's quite easy to add a unit with fobs to control the central locking. (Amazon/eBay 'keyless entry kit')
Topic: Installing Hawk Keyless Central Locking Topic: Adding keyless entry for 2004 S model Seeing as these new door locks have not been fitted yet, and no re-programming has been done either,
has the battery gone flat?
Edit: One extra thought, if the new key has a transponder,
is it near the barrel when starting the car so being accidentally read or interfering with the existing one? A friend had his & hers BMWs which were a bit picky with both keys on the same ring.
Travelling auto locksmith may be the most economic solution if you are in a city.
The remote locking and immobiliser are two separate things, programming the remote is a separate (and easy) thing.
