stiff rear wheel bearing
« on: May 19, 2021, 12:07:14 PM »
Hello

I am changing the discs and pads on the rear of our 2005 Jazz and notice that even without discs and calipers fitted the rear hubs are quite stiff to turn, they don't spin freely. Is this normal? We have noticed a hum at motorway speeds which I thought could be bearings, but there was no noticeable play or noise from any wheel when jacked up. Are the rear bearings overtightened maybe?

many thanks

Dave

The hub should turn very easily. With the wheel fitted, give it a decent spin. It should carry on rotating for apx 15-20 seconds easily, possibly more. I've never timed it, but there shouldn't be any resistance.

When you do this, have a listed for any gumbling/grating noises. It will indicate a bearing shot, which is what you are hearing. Compare one side to the other, to see if you can tell the difference.
