Jazz imposter (caliper identification)
« on: September 26, 2021, 08:19:32 PM »
I hope you don't mind me sliding in to the jazz forum, I recently acquired a 53plate Honda spike and I've been told that many parts (including the brakes) are compatible with the jazz.
I'm looking for a new drivers side brake caliper as mines binding.
The serial number on it is : nissin 16cl14vn
Does that sound familiar to the jazz fraternity?

just remember to  check the brake hose hasnt collapsed that can be done by trying to push the piston back normally then try again after loosening the bleed nipple on the caliper.. if it goes back freely after releasing the bleed nipple then its a collapsed hose which can work like a one way valve.
also make sure the slide pins arn't seized

Hi

Thanks for that, I'm not that clued up on brakes but I'm learning as I go with the help of a friend (who knows what they are doing). I'll see if I can get this one going, I'm just trying to source a replacement just in case it's terminal

I had to look the Spike up, but I was reminded that I had seen one of these roomy little vehicles before - as a disabled conversion.

The caliper you have there certainly looks like the Jazz/Civic part, googling the Nissin number seems to concur.

The common issue with these calipers is the pads binding in the carriers, it's worth removing everything including the anti-rattle shims and sliders, making sure every bit of corrosion is removed from the casting before reassembly. If the piston is seizing in the bore, you are better off fitting a new pattern caliper.

I fitted a pair to the old Jazz without any problems, it's not worth messing about with seal & piston kits at the price you can buy a complete caliper, something like this

For £30 it's probably worth a punt. Thanks

The mobilio spikes are really cool. I always liked them and the stepwgn's of that era.

Do you have any pics?

Yeah I couldn't resist, it had been sat for over a year and needed a few jobs doing (including the caliper) usually I'd walk well away from a vehicle that wasn't running well but I couldn't resist. It was too cute, ha!

Hi guys,
offtopic question: My front brakes has 240mm disc brake, can I change it to 258 mm disc or it's not possible? Has anyone tried it? Thank you
