Power door locks - FIXED :-)
« on: February 05, 2017, 09:28:03 PM »
Hi,
Just an update to my door lock problem (http://clubjazz.org/forum/index.php?topic=8823.msg46238).  All three lock mechanisms were faulty so I bought a second hand one to replace the front passenger door and this worked fine.
So, I carefully disassembled the now-spare "faulty" mechanism to debug; it contains two 12v DC motors (one for the main lock and one for the super-lock) and the brushes had became carbonised - to free these I lifted each one clear of its gear wheel and applied 12v direct to run them at full speed and clean the carbon deposits from the commutators.  I reassembled everything and tested it by connecting to the car door lock connector and everything worked fine :-)
With this knowledge I removed the nearside rear mechanism and followed the same process, the locking motor ran but not at full speed so I swapped it with the identical super-lock motor (I have purposefully disabled super-locking) and everything worked fine.
A word of caution, when removing the mechanism cover, take it very slowly and take a photo of the internals as soon as the cover is off.  There are two springs which tend to dislocate but they are easy to relocate - the first time I tried with the second rear mechanism I missed one spring, fitted the lock back into the door, closed the door but couldn't open it again - it took a bit of fiddling with an allen key to manually disengage the lock!
Tomorrow's job is to fix the final faulty offside rear mechanism and I have no reason to suspect it will not work.
So to summarise, three locks failed in exactly the same way (some sort of switching surge I suspect) and the main dealer wanted £860 to replace them - up to now it's cost me £29 for a second hand lock :-)
