Jazz "mouth"
« on: July 30, 2009, 08:05:14 AM »
A lot of retro and custom bits and pieces are available for the Jazz but one i cant seem to source or to see any discussions about is the missing grill at the front lower end the sort of "mouth" where evidently if you get a stone chip in at speed it can cause quite a bit of damage.........has anyone seen or found any grills for the Jazz "mouth" yet ....Joe

My brothe in law has a Suzuki Swift got his radiator holed with disastrous results fortunately he was able to claim on his insurance for repairs to the engine - so precautions taken fitting a mesh could be a wise move when it stops raining ? I'll check if I can fit some mesh to the lower opening & check out Sunsport grills

Found this interesting web page describing how you can make and fit your own protective grill to a Honda Fit.

http://www.fitfreak.net/forums/greater-calgary-community/45069-front-bumper-grille-mesh.html

The poster's first suggestion was just to simply use cable ties (zap straps?) to attach the sheet of mesh to the back of the existing plastic fins in the lower grille.

There are also links on the same page for more sophisticated(?) modifications with photos.

If you read through the various message thread.  This is perhaps the simplest solution:

http://www.fitfreak.net/forums/472431-post28.html

Look carefully and you can just about see the black cable ties used to strap the blue mesh to the vertical fins.

Contains some great close up photos of how the mesh was fitted by this Fit owner:

A solution using black plastic gutter guard mesh and perhaps cheaper too.  However, I don't think this product is available in the UK.

Just did a DIY attempt yesterday.  Bought the ripspeed grill from Halfords £25, there is enough to do this job twice (forgot the other thread mentioned a cheaper version could be obtained from a DIY shop).  I got the black one to match the car colour.  The front bumper came off very easy.  I lined the mesh up with the opening and then cut the mesh roughly to shape and then attached it to the mouth using small cable ties as mentioned on another thread.  Tidied up the look by trimming it further and folding the excess over the top of the hole.

Looks good and you can not see the ties as its all black.

Makes you wonder why Honda didn't fit a finer mesh in the first place!

Be nice if they had fitted any mesh at all ! -

None of the Honda cars I have owned has had any protective mesh in the grill - even good old Rover (bless em) used to fit nice strong mesh in the grills.  Seems to be a real blind spot with Honda and it is unforgiveable really considering the damage a stone can do to either the main engine cooling radiator (loss of coolant = seized engine) or the aircon radiator (expensive to replace, and leaking gas can damage ozone layer).
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

It's not only Honda that suffers from this as I noticed my parents KIA also has no mesh in their grill.
