How much is this Jazz worth?
« on: June 20, 2016, 05:52:33 PM »
Hello my friend is offering to sell me her 2010 1.4 auto Jazz ES. It has 70k miles and full Honda service history. All looks good to me and drives as nice as I can expect from a 6 year-old Jazz.

She is saying £5k. Is this worth it? I like that it has Honda services and 1.4 not 1.2, and it has the ES trim which I believe is about mid-range? Not too fussed on the auto but I don't mind. Would you pay £5k? Thanks for any help.

It's not cheap that's for sure, that sort of price is what you would expect to pay on a forecourt of a none franchised dealer with of course the peace of mind that can bring you in most cases.

I would guess she has looked on the Internet and seen some around that price and that's how she has achieved the price.

Thanks for the reply

What would you pay for it personally? £4.5k?

Around  £4,000 i would say, its about average millage for that age but Jazz's can often be had with well below that sort of mileage at not much more money,  for example i payed  £4,900 for one of my Exs, Ok was 2009 model but that was 10 months ago so is comparable,  that's also from a dealer with FHSH and 32,000 miles and spotless etc

Its all about the condition of the vehicle at 6 years old the trade would knock it out to auction house. If clean and with invoiced service + decent MOT 6mth + and it drove OK then around the £4k mark but allow £300-400 to correct any issues.
But you have to like driving the car otherwise it will be a 'I wish I had .'.. buy

Never buy anything from a friend if you value the friendship!

There is a lot to be said for this advice,  if anything is wrong with the car there will always be a nagging thought at the back of your mind if she knew about the problem(s) before she sold it to you,  and as others have noted it is a bit pricey for a car 'from a mate'.
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

I paid £4k for a 64k miles 11 reg 1.4 EX manual, in good condition with full Honda service history.

Unless you think another £1k is worth it for a car thats a year older, is only mid range and is auto I'd suggest you might find better.

Enter the details of the car into webuyanycar or similar website and see what the trade in price is for it. That may give you some negotiating room.
I do tend to echo the advice above about buying from a friend. If you do buy it you must make it a proper business transaction, where you pay a fair price based on what the car is actually worth, and both must be happy with that.

Hello my friend is offering to sell me her 2010 1.4 auto Jazz ES. .

I never buy from private sellers.

Why?

1. No legal redress if things go wrong - unless misdescribed and then you have to sue.
2.  People lie.
3. Friends fall out.
4. You did not say a close friend so they may not care.
5. People sell cars when expenditure is needed.
6. Look at the MOT history FIRST.
7. People overvalue cars so either you pay too much or your friend is offended when you make a low offer. People are often easily offended over money.
8. You are going to get a proper check for outstanding finance? And damaged /write off not declared? Is the seller going to pay for this or will you?    No check means you are open to being screwed big style. And sellers can be iffy about checks as "you don't trust them". It's a business transaction.
9. Don't mix businss with friendship.

BUT if the deal is great, and no faults found, go for it.

This deal sounds very expensive.

Just thought I would mention the Original Poster asked the question on the 20th June and replied twice on that date. They have not been seen on this website since.

This thread may have some generic use for buying advice but I would not bother addressing the OP any more.

By now I imagine they bought the car from their friend for the £5,000, realised it was a rip off and fell out. Then the car broke down on the M1 in a rain storm on the way to taking his brother to an important medical appointment. The OP then demanded money back from the 'friend' but they had already spent the money on a holiday, so they had to go to a Pay Day Lender. Having failed to make payments to the Lender, the friend was eventually made bankrupt and became homeless. The car buyer also lost out massively on the repairs and ended up borrowing money from their Dad, who, finding himself unable to find the cash for his son and also for life saving surgery for his other child, shot himself. Unfortunately, the wound was not fatal and so the original poster then found themselves with no  car, no money, Dad in a coma, brother needing life saving surgery and friend bankrupt and homeless.

The moral - never buy a car from a friend.
