Ignition Switch
« on: March 10, 2016, 10:57:22 AM »
I'm having to replace the ignition barrel on my 2006 Jazz.  On looking around I'm wondering if the ignition switch used on the Jazz, is the same that's been used in other Honda's?

Does anyone know if the switch was used in other models?

'We' (my mate who's a mechanic) and I had to drill out the barrel in my Jazz so we were hoping to just remove the barrel from a replacement and adjust as required to allow me to use my original key.   But understandably the breakers want to sell me the switch, ECU, barrel and key.  However, I'm seeing a huge difference in prices depending on what model your searching for.

Also, if I replaced the ECU unit with the replacement unit and used the key from the replacement, would this be enough, or would the car computer need to be reset to the new key?

The ECU knows the code from the ID46 chip in the keys, this chip can be swapped between keys if yours is the type that can be dismantled.

Probably best to keep the original ECU in the car so all accessories/options are known and mileage is correct.

You can buy a new set of 'fingers' for worn out Honda locks, seems there are 8 sizes of lever in the barrel. http://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?SearchText=Honda+lock+repair+kit

Looking at youtube it seems the ignition barrel assembly can be removed from the car by using a chisel to undo the 3 security screws holding the assembly in place, then dismantled to get to the levers.

Hi,
It was getting more and more difficult to get the key into the ignition on my 2005 jazz so in the end the dealer fitted a new lock and key for an eyewatering £600. Wish I'd pulled the tumblers out of the barrel now😕 on my car the central locking was key controlled and repairing one lock cost me £100. The dealer said they couldn't retro fit a plip key system (why??) So I bought one from ebay and fitted it myself,
£20 and works fine,
Chris

Thanks TG.  I've managed to buy a replacement switch for £50 so we'll see what we can do with it.  I'll update the forum when we get there....

Thanks also to chrisv.

I took out the barrel and removed 3 pins which allowed me to continue using my original key.  That way I didn't need to replace the chip reader that sits around the ignition barrel.

Job done!

Thanks for the help Clubjazz ;-)

Wish I'd done that, saved about £600,

Good result and probably best course of action, I could start my first car with a coin. Remote locking add-on like chrisv says is also quite staightforward.
