Gearbox oil
« on: March 05, 2016, 08:20:51 AM »
I have the dreaded whine on my (manual) gearbox. I'm going to change the gearbox oil but can anyone tell me which brand/spec I need to buy. I'd prefer not to buy it from a Honda dealer.

You can often find the correct man gear oil on E Bay or use a quality oil manufacturer findmy oil web page.

Never put anything but Honda MTF in the gearbox. It will not do anything to the whine unfortunately.

Don't you think Honda MTF will ease my whine? Should I add something like Molyslip?

Whine is cause by worn input shaft bearing. If it is already worn there is nothing you can do to make it quite. Molyslip should make it deteriorate slower but even without I have seen people drive on for months and even a year without any failure.

It is sad and far too many cars are still suffering from noisy bearings but the cost of replacement has come down significantly. I queried a few indies and costs were ranging from £300 - £500
