2014 Honda Jazz will not be made at Swindon
« on: November 10, 2012, 03:13:00 PM »
The next generation Honda Jazz due in 2014-ish, will not be made in Swindon.

Quote
'The news that the next Honda Jazz (Fit) will not be made in the UK will have disappointed suppliers expecting new contracts for a wider Jazz range and higher production volumes post-2014.

Quote
Currently, the Jazz model for the European market is produced by Suzuka Factory in Japan, Honda Automobile Company China (CHAC) and HUM [Swindon]. To benefit from production economies of scale and fully utilizing Honda’s global production resources, the next generation Jazz, scheduled for 2014, will be produced outside of Europe.

Although a Type R and estate versions of the Civic are planned to go into production at Swindon:

This report http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/local/9959453.New_models_bring_boost_to_Honda/ mentions Japan and China for the next Jazz. However, with the recent worsening in Sino-Japanese relations making a dent in the Honda profits http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-20119588 I have to wonder if there will be second thoughts about too much investment in China.

With the announcement of 800 redundancies at Swindon later this year :-[, perhaps there will be sufficient capacity for the 2014 Jazz to be manufactured at the plant after all.

Good manufacturing processes 'design quality in', I believe. Very different to how it used to be. The Japanese have been, and are, world leaders in that respect. The 'labour' component - such as it is with mechanised/robotised assembly - is no longer much of the quality equation. If at all.

In theory, anyway...

I agree.  Stuff that originates in China (Great Wall Motors, Huawdong Pumps) is often of inferior quality.  In 2009 I accompanied my friend to Shenzhen to see manufacturers of gas safety equipment.  He has several patented designs but fabrication in South Africa was too expensive, working out to £ 22 a unit.  We visited 11 factories and were shown immaculately manufactured pc-boards and gas fittings that exceeded any international requirements.  The one factory could supply 15 000 units per month with an ironclad quality guarantee and the cost of the assembled product came to £ 9.50, dropping to £ 7 if we ordered more than 50 000 units a month.  This was an ISO 9002 certified factory.  You could eat your lunch off the factory floor.

The first batch that was received were perfect in every respect and a sample was submitted to the SABS (A South African standards testing organisation) and received 100% compliance.  Since then, there has not been one return of over 500 000 units received.

So if Chinese suppliers can manufacture to such tight quality control, I would have no hesitation in buying a Honda made in a Chinese assembly plant.

I find it quite funny that people tell everyone that they don't buy "Chinese Junk", but a large part of all the electronics they use is made in China...

we have no control of where we buy our things it is the companies that have things made in china and i think we need to bring stuff back over here because the prices charged dont go down for us the profits for them in the short term do until people find out that it is shoddy and stop buying it

the whole point about China is that they never went through an industrial revolution, the technology to manufacture everything was invented in the west and transplanted there - whole factories were built there by greedy western companies who thought they could make extra profit using cheap Chinese labour to 'assemble' equipment.  I remember talking to a very smart guy on a plane once, at the time when HongKong was handed back to China - he said 'people think China is taking over Hongkong, but it is actually the other way around, Hong Kong is China's gateway to the world and will be the seed that grows the high technology and investment China will benefit from' - as it happens China has turned into an environmental nightmare with hundreds of thousands of people dying every year from pollution - and still the rest of the world cashes in on the lack of controls in China to dump all their dirty industries there.

China is starting to develop technology of its own, but I don't think will ever catch up with the west on account of the lack of freedom to communicate around the country.  Their leaders still have the country in lockdown and do not permit freedom of expression and communication.  One of our hosts in Shenzhen had a magnificent home and 14 cars and owned the skyscraper his offices were in but said that after he visited Australia and the USA, he felt constrained when coming back home, all the petty restrictions and red tape got him down.  He longed for a place in China like the University of California Berkeley where he gave a talk and experienced feedback and interaction with students.  That is entirely absent in China.

Regarding our gas devices, our main competitor was another Chinese manufacturer, so we had to achieve some way of producing these at a competitive price.  The factory I visited did not have children at the soldering stations, it was mostly automated and just had technicians walking about checking and maintaining the equipment.  Sure there are computer board plants where young teenagers solder components on the board, but this operation is too slow and unreliable. One plant I went to was making LED lamps like this, people physically touching a hot iron to surface mount components.  But the failure rate is over 20% due to the haste the management run the line at, so their market share is dwindling.

the reason why UK, and Europe is still in recession and has zero growth is that we have no way out of it,  the governments only answer is to do more shopping or build more houses. Trouble is  90% of the things we buy are made overseas, so all we are doing is helping other peoples economies, and most of the the things we need to build houses (and increasingly the labour) also have to be imported.   In UK and Europe with our low carbon targets and strict labour laws we have put a burden on our manufacturing sector that makes them totally uncompetitive against countries like China. If I had the money and knowledge to start a new manufacturing business the last place I would think of is UK / Europe where everything is stacked against you - I would go to a place where the government does not treat manufacturers like second class citizens and thinks more of 'casino' bankers than it does of engineers.

In SA, the biggest growth sector is corruption.  One hears daily about (mainly govt officials) leaping on the gravy train.  The minister of communications allowed her boyfriend to be awarded multi-million Rand "contracts" but doing sweet b-all and when confronted, said it was a witch-hunt and smear campaign against her.

Then we have a useless president who is building a compound for himself out in the bush, with public funds, and not being technologically literate, tried to imply that he was paying for it himself.

I see Robert Mugabe visited the Pope and shook his hand.  Another person who should have been strangled at birth.
