gearbox and clutch replacement

Hi guys im new to this forum. first post and i come out swinging  . my honda jazz 2005 1.2 manual has decided its time to replace my gearbox and through a clutch at me while she is at it. the low whining noise coming from the gear box has turned into a heavy grinding sound, mechanic checked the gearbox oil and found metal flakes in there. i know its a common problem for honda jazz and was hoping the some one in london could point me in good direction please.

sorry that this is not is not in answer to your question, but mine has started a low whining noise (only done 58k miles), could that be the gearbox on its way out?

its the bearings that are causing the issues you have, turns out when they were made metal swarf was not removed which in turn damaged the bearings

These whining noises are most likely coming from the input shaft bearing. regardless of what you do if they are meant to fail, they will. but, the whine will just keep getting louder but the bearing wont break. I have known a few Jazz owners who drove 10,000+ miles with the noisy bearings so there is no reason to be scared.

I have seen a few listings online from mechanics offering bearing replacements under £500 but how much work is needed decides the final quote

It depends what has gone wrong. But if I were you, and paid for the entire box off job, then I would change the clutch and have the box looked at IF I want to keep the car for long. You will find a few companies on eBay who can give you fully refub gearbox in exchange for yours for a set amount. If you want them to take your box off and put new one on then they charge a bit extra.

@ alpine yep sorry to say but welcome to the club. my one started at about 70k.  @legend-ary is right it wont die i have made it to 73k and now it got louder, and its switched from whining to grinding.   now im currently on a hunt for someone to recondition the box, i have spoken to one mechanic and he said to me further driving will make it more problematic to recondition it as you may damage the housing. so fat it looks like its 500 for a recon box box, labour and box.

I've spoken to an indpendant Honda specialist not too far away from me in Leeds. They said teh gearbox would need new bearings which are at the bottom of the gearbox, which would entail gearbox out, strip down and re-fit. Total cost £300 to £350. The bearings themselves do not cost much, under £30 and the rest is labour. A gearbox oil change will not help, as I understand the bearings are sealed.

This is pretty annoying as I have only has the car 6 months and was only planning on keeping it another 18 months. Was thinking of getting rid now, but if I can get it sorted for £300-£350 I will probably have to bite the bullet and get it repaired. It will cost me more to get another car.  £300 is only the cost of a standard service on a posh family motor I suppose.

I would say its a steal at £300! Even Gumtree ads are asking for £500+. When I bought my Jazz, it came with a receipt for £750 for the bearing replacement job by an indie! If you don't mind, can you PM me the name and contact of this dealership for future reference.

Don't sell the car like this as you are likely to lose more money if you sell with this issue as it is such a known fault, everyone knows.

note I was told you do not need a new or replacement gearbox (just new bearings) so maybe this is why the cost is lower than elsewhere

makes no sense to used sealed bearings internally in a gearbox unless the bearing has an external face (ie drive-shaft bearing) because the gear oil is used to lube the bearings,  when I had my wifes gearbox done the mechanic showed me the bearing (only 1 affected) and when it was spun it was a little noisy, nothing like the noise it makes when under load though.  I don't remember seeing any seal on it - ebay kit is showing seal-less bearings and  a driveshaft oil-seal (notice the helical pattern of 'oil thrower' rings on inner face to encourage oil on shaft to go back into gearbox as shaft rotates).

my wifes GD gearbox was done at 80K,  mine was still OK at 120K when I sold the car,  can only assume molyslip in mine extended bearing life.

Once the bearing is making loud noises I think it is too late for an oil change or adding molyslip,  I was just highlighting that because I added Moly to gearbox as soon as I had the car it did a lot of good,  because my gearbox was still OK at 120K when I sold it (an ounce of prevention (or in this case 250mL) is better than a ton of cure).... (and a lot cheaper at less than £10)
