Is the Mk2 Just cheaper built than mk1?
« on: July 07, 2015, 11:00:17 PM »
was Thinking about switching from mk1 to mk2, went today to look at one for almost an hour
am I the only one who thinks that the material quality on the mk1 looks much more solid? All the plastics in the car looks soo cheap, Mk1 had already pretty thin metal used on body, but seems like these have even much thinner  :'(
the car was of good spec 1.4,much better spec than my basic old 1.2 mk1 but the quality.. I just didn't see it there to justify spending good money on it.

We used to have a hrv and have come to the conclusion that the plastics on the older cars are better quality

We had a Mk 1 followed by the Mk 2 EX model we now own and the quality of the plastics on the Mk 1 is definitely much better than the Mk 2.
It's a shame that HONDA skimped/economised on the interior generally as the GE is a much better car in most other areas compared to the Mk 1.
It's to be hoped that the interior and plastics on the forthcoming Mk 3 are much improved over the Mk2.

Definatly seems so. I deliberately bought gd1 jazz as I hate the gd2. Next car will probably be a Toyota if they don't improve the crappy rustproofing and cheapness. It's nearly as bad as Ford's for rust  :P

the only fault that is wrong with my 12year old jazz is the rust that has started to appear underside :( Wonder how many more years I get before

Hi
The mk1 body internals etc plus the vtec engine would have been a good package.

The mk1 did have a "hewn from granite" feel which the mk2 certainly doesn't have.

I'm expecting the mk3 to be even worse.

am I right to say that mk 1 was made in Japan, and mk 2 in UK. Maybe that makes a difference?

i have had both my civic and jazz from swindon and they are perfect, i hear that in japan they don't rust proof cars as much as here and i love that the ge is fully galvanised

IIRC the UK Jazz production started in 2nd half of 2009 http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motoring/uk-honda-jazz-production-begins and the earlier MK 2 were from Japan.

When I replaced my last MK1 for a new MK2 Jazz 5 years ago I posted a list of what I thought where downgrades of the newer model over the old - one of those listed was the quality of interior fittings including plastics.

I normally would have replaced my current MK2 Jazz before now but haven't because I am not prepared to exchange it for another MK2 and I've been patiently waiting for the MK3 hoping that many of the irritations I had with the MK2 would be rectified.

After 5 years of ownership I can say that most of my complaints were justified - the interior plastics have picked up a lot of scratches whereas the interiors of both my MK1s still looked immaculate when I parted with them after 3 and 4 years respectively.

Having said all this, I have had 5 years and 78K miles of trouble free motoring and that's why I will still be looking to replace with another Honda Jazz albeit a MK3. Furthermore, I have grown to prefer the i-VTEC over the i-DSI engine.

Unfortunately my original post "New Model Jazz Irritations" upset a lot forum members, so much so that the post was banished to the Recycle Bin.

The post is still available- just not posted for a long time

Unfair to say it was "banished to the Recycle Bin"

The thin paint on all cars that come out of Swindon, is legendary.  There are countless posts on the EP3 and FN2 forums on this subject. So your cars are not perfect, you just don't have anything else to compare them to.

JDM cars don't have rust-proofing because they don't use salt on their roads.
UKDM cars built in Japan are rust-proofed.

Having owned Hondas for the last 28 years, (so my experience on this subject is probably greater than anybody else on here), my current UK built GG6 is way down on build quality in comparison to my Japanese-built DC5 and DC2 and all the other Japanese-built cars I've owned.

In fact, my HWZ, (Concerto 1.6i-16), which was built by Rover at Longbridge, was better built than my GG6.

My first generation Honda Civic 1979 (could have been a SB1, SG, SE or VB) bought some 36 years ago was very well built. I have since sold it. It was about the same size or perhaps smaller than my current Jazz.
