very confused about tyre and wheel sizes for 2014 1.4 ES Plus

My 2014 1.4 ES Plus CVT was described on Honda’s website as having 16” alloy wheels (marketing stuff).
When I put my car registration into websites that tell you the wheels and tyres for your car they all say:  175/65 R15.   They say that the front and rear are the same.   I get the same result when if I just enter the details for the car (model year, engine size etc).

However, the handbook says:

Front/Rear
175/65 R15 84H
185/55 R16 83H

Spare
T135/80 D15 99M

I am thinking of:
getting a full size spare wheel and tyre and/or getting 4 wheels and winter tyres.
Clearly, the full size spare would need to be the same size as the other wheels and tyres.
For winter tyres it would not matter if they were a different size from the summer ones, as long as the tyres and wheels fit the car, as they would all be the same size.
I have looked at threads about tyres, but still don’t understand why the Honda website says that the car has 16” wheels, but websites all throw up 15” wheels and the handbook says that the front are different from the rear.

I have read the other threads, but still don't understand.

Anyone know the answer?

have a look at the tyre size on your car on the sidewall of actual tyres which are fitted 

a 175/65 R15 and a 185/55 R16 tyre are same outside diameter to less than 1mm (which means speedometer will not be affected).

my wifes Jazz Si has 185/55 R16 wheels and the best winter tyres are 175/65 R15 on steel wheels

I very much doubt that the front/rear tyres will be different sizes, as culzean says check the tyres actually fitted on the car.

I have 16" tyres on my ES Plus CVT.

The sizes quoted in the handbook are the two possible wheel/tyre sizes fitted. They are definitely not one size front and the other rear. I have 185/55R16 summers on alloys and 175/65R15 winters on steels. I put one of the unused wheels as spare as I don't like relying on the sticky stuff! I know that a summer wheel as spare when using winters is not ideal but it's enough to get me home, and most space savers are not winter tyres anyway.

I believe the ES model was originally sold with the 15" wheels but now has been "upraded" to 16". The overall diameter is the same with both sizes as the 16" have slightly lower profile tyres.

We recently bought an EX but considered ES Plus and both had the same style of 16" alloy wheels with 185/55R16 tyres (front and rear).

However, all the tyre and wheel webites that ask for your registration number of model details come up with 15" wheels and tyres.  It's strange that they are not up to date.

Probably because it is only since the ES was upgraded to ES Plus about eighteen months ago that the larger wheels were fitted and websites have not updated their details to the ES Plus, it would also be equally confusing for anyone with the ES if it told them that they had 16" wheels.

Apart from that I never put my registration number or make/model into those sites, they always give you the option of putting in the size and details of the tyres that are actually fitted on the vehicle so you know you are getting the correct quote for your car.

This can be confusing.

My understanding is the you can fit a set of four of either 175/65 R15 84H or 185/55 R16 83H for normal use - which ever but all the same.

A set of four 175/65 R15 84H steel wheels and tyres would be suitable for winter use.

In winter you could carry an alloy 185/55 R16 83H as a temporary spare.

In summer you could carry a steel 175/65 R15 84H as a temporary spare.

Or you can stick all year with four alloy 185/55 R16 83H on the car and purchase a single steel 175/65 R15 84H as a temporary spare.

As said earlier, both 175/65 R15 84H and 185/55 R16 83H have the same rolling circumference. The standard spacesaver has a slightly smaller rolling circumference. A second hand spacesaver may probable have a very old tyre on it (over 10 years). A new spacesaver tyre would likely cost almost as much as a brand new steel 175/65 R15 84H wheel and tyre.

If you are in top end of Scotland  - understood but the majority of the Uk is a bit wet, cold certainly, but not like arctic!

Below 7 deg. Presumably driving performance of summer tyres degrade below this temp.

I just checked the average lows for Torquay and it is lower than 7 deg for 3 months of the year!

However the average highs are greater during the same Jan - March period - so, apart from highly unsocial wee hours when the average lows actually occur around these here parts, I should not worry too much about winter tires.

Or am I being thick?

It's hard to say how long the duration of the average highs are? I would say the peak temps for Jan-March would be rather short in the middle of the day, given how short daylight hours are over the period. I'm sure the general surface temperature of the road would be rather lower.

There are always all-seasons tyres as a compromise.
