CV Joints?
« on: May 18, 2014, 04:19:23 PM »
hey guys,
I hit the kerb(probably), moving along it at some speed, result: blown tire and noise while in full lock.
It sounds like brakes dragging/grinding, something like this, but only when doing tight turn at low speed..
outer/inner cv-joint or both? something else?
thanks

Have a look at it closely parked up on full lock either way. Sounds like something got bent.

did not notice anything obvious while changing for spare.

Scraped rim, not bent, sideways impact, it happens more when turning left
undecided whether it's wheel bearings or cv joints

bent things, should more affect wheel position rather then cause grinding?

You might have damaged the steering rack assembly.  I once had a Golf that did that, but only on one side when on full lock.  There is a seal at the end of the rack and this one was slightly adrift

Only a garage doing an inspection can diagnose the problem.

You may have bent a wishbone, or the body it attaches to, or bent the steering rack or.... the list is quite long. If I had X ray vision over several hundred miles....

After replacing spare with normal wheel everything returned to normal and sound magically disappeared..
Garage that did tire could not find anything wrong visually and test-driving..

So I was cautiously happy for another 300 miles till I got another kind of knocking.

Now it does knocking sound all the time while rolling. Sound disappears as soon as I apply braking or acceleration. the moment I lift foot off the pedals it knocks again.
the faster car rolls the higher the frequency of knocking.

I was abroad at the time, went to the garage, the guy spent an hour with the car checking suspension, wheel bearings, etc. did few test drives, was not sure what that could be, said needs more time that he does not have.

Ideas? :)
IMHO, it's not bent frame or components, as it's rotational sound, and impact was not that strong, it was sliding impact at 20-30mph

Not that weak an impact either.

Swap the wheels every 300 miles and make it magically disappear each time? I know, not a satisfactory answer, but without seeing it in the metal I'm at a loss too.

I'm tipping cv joints. They turn with the wheels and take all the brunt with kerb impacts. And knock/clank when failing.
Makes sense to me anyways. Why not change outer anyway they don't cost that much and is a easy enough job.
While it's off the wheel the inner can be better checked too.

It's nothing simple like mud guard is it.. Behind the brake disc, I've known muck or stones to get lodged in there and can be quite erratic with their sound making. Try prying it a bit with a screwdriver or something to pry it away from brake disc.

Wishbones tend to clank when just setting off or cornering.

Best way to check cv joint is get it on full lock in a car park and listen. You will hear them easy enough with window down if it's them.

recently my fit started making some noise when in full lock and going reverse.. No i didn't hit anything prior to the sound coming on.. The sound it makes is not so much grinding or knocking but more like metal warping or bending, croaking if you will..

Any gurus hear know anything?

Oh as for those with the knocking sounds, i use to have them when going slow over humps, the culprits were the front swaybar endlinks..
