Rattling from heat shield over the cat
« on: December 04, 2013, 07:22:22 PM »
I had this ruttling noise on tick over for some time now but I could not find out where it come from until last week when MOT guy told me that the heat shield is loose and need welding.
Has anybody experienced this on GD1 and is there another way to fix this without welding?

Yes, mine was loose and rattling before we changed the cat and exhaust centre section.
Welding it up might be best.

It is a bit of a PITA I expect if you don't drop the cat and try to do it in situ. The reason mine was rattling was the thin metal of the heat shield had cracked around one of the securing bolts (not easy to get out!!). I did a rather good bodge that involved blind rivets and a bit of similar metal cut to shape, then washers to ease the pressure from the bolt.
You could also make up a bracket to go around the cat, but I wouldn't want to do it without dropping the cat first, whichever method you use. Easiest to take exhaust off in 1 bit, manifold back.
Dropping the cat: manifold end, sheared bolt, difficult to get at. Exhaust end, cat and exhaust flange practically welded together, heat/angle grinder or just cut it off and use a repair section.

i have had exhaust heatshield break away from exhaust on many cars, either on weld or by a bolt.  have successfully used a jubilee clip (worm drive pipe clamp)  where the geometry of parts allows it, and it has fixed it permanently.  you may need to join two together if one not long enough.

one broken shield caused  'zinging' sound at a certain engine speed and was a devil to find out what was causing it.
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot
