Looking for my 1st Jazz
« on: November 14, 2013, 08:39:57 PM »
Hi

Looking to trade down from my Skoda Superb.

Been thinking about the following:
Toyota Yaris 1.3
Mazda 2 1.3
Honda Jazz 1.4

Test driven the manual 1.2 -
Love the spave, the modern speedo and
The amazing magic seats!

Felt the 1.2 struggle a bit uphill.
So looking at the 1.4

Bit disappointed there is no spare.
Higher insurance
And finding a used Jazz with satnav is neigh impossible!

Heard a few stories about whining from gear box = rebuilds?

Apart from that anything i should check?
I assume EX is top model with most toys?

Advice most welcome!

Thanks all!!! :-)

The whining gearbox only affects the Mk1 Jazz.

EX has climate control, USB audio connection, 16" alloy wheels, cruise control, auto lights/wipers and panoramic glass roof. ES from 2011 also have climate control and USB connection so that might be an option if the EX's bigger wheels and glass roof don't appeal to you.

Mazda2 is better to drive but not as spacious. I can't comment about the Yaris as I've never driven one nor actually sat in one.

Have a read of the FAQ:

Cheers Richard!

Looking in your facelift thread - is this from 01 Feb 2011?
So 2011 ES is a facelift?

I prefer smaller wheel for comfort.
Also like to stick smaller winter tyres on each winter :-)

Just had a look on Honda site.
The white ones look real cool.
Like the look of the SI (esp fog lights) more than EX.
But prefer EX for more toys.

No SI spec in your facelift thread?

..."Felt the 1.2 struggle a bit uphill. So looking at the 1.4..." (Chan)

The 1.2 is 1198cc. The 1.4 is, in fact, 1339cc so is just 12% larger capacity.

There is just one-tenth more power in the so-called 1.4. 0-60mph there is just under a second advantage to the 1.4.

Either are 'not bad' up steep hills if you use the gears and revs up to 5000(ish) before changing up.

SatNav... why not buy a portable one you can take from car to car?

Hope this broadens your choice... if you go for the spaciousness of a Jazz.

In my test drive experience--
Mazda 2- better handling, feels faster, looks sportier! But very noisy -little sound insulation, and lots of noise from tyres , so noisy you can't drown it with the radio! Also very few storage spaces , basically weird semi open glovebox, door pockets , and that's about it. On my 2nd test drive the noise killed the deal for me.

Yaris, again looks nice , not as sharp handling as Mazda, but the seats have such a pronounced curve on them I had to return to the dealer after 30 minutes of a day long test  as I couldn't continue as they made my back hurt so much. I have got a duff back , so the seats might suit other people, but not for me.

Jazz, first of all comfy seats, especially  after the seat mod I found on the Fit forum. Doesn't handle so well if you want to drive like an 18 year old, quieter than the others, seemed well built, lots of storage space, acceptable stereo( not brilliant but OK ). Spare wheels can be purchased on e-bay , I bought a Rover alloy one that fits. Very good fuel economy, I have averaged 51.9 mpg from new, only 4,600 miles though.
My Jazz has 15" wheels, the 16" wheels ones I drove were a bit noisier. I tested The Si , I wanted that, but again the seats are a bit firmer and didn't suit me, but in my opinion a much nicer looking Jazz.
My 1.4 ES suits me , and for me was the best choice.

Yes noticed a slight drop in mpg and little faster for 10bhp more.
Not sure worth the 1.2 to 1.4 upgrade.
Though i guess less strain on a 1.4 :-)

Nah - never liked mobile satnavs.
Prefer bigger and better receptions of built-in.
Though £££££ :-(

Cheers Bill!
Thanks for your experience of all 3 cars on my list!
I do prefer the toys in EX.
But i like look of SI.

I won't touch a built-in satnav until they include free updates for the life of the car.

Otherwise, it is convenient to have the satnav built in, but you will probably discover very quickly that the mapping wasn't up-to-date when the car was put together.  I've not had any satnav signal reception issues in my Jazz but had to devise a suitable dashboard mounting - the bottom of the windscreen is too far away to touch or read.

Facelift Si came out last year about 18 months after the Jazz was facelifted.

If an ES has climate control, it's a facelift model. Inevitably there will be some crossover between pre and post facelift.

Some owners have experianced problems in sourcing replacement tyres for models with 16 inch wheels.

Satnav mounting...

I use what Garmin call a 'portable friction mount'. You can buy them as a separate accessory, of course. It simply sits on the dash. Doesn't slide about ('friction') and is very convenient as you can site it exactly where you want anytime you want.

Also, it's a doddle to take the satnav 'display' and this 'portable mount' from car to car as required. We take it to Europe for holiday touring and simply sit it on any hire-car's dash, too.

It certainly beats having it on the windscreen mount.

I'd imagine TomTom et al may offer this type of mount, too.

Regards sourcing the 16" tyres, I'd also read that before buying the jazz but I always buy online and on the swiss websites there are plenty available so I can't believe it's different in the UK.
I would go for the Si, I have the 2009 swiss sport model and for me personally would have regretted not buying it. You can see mine on the gallery and I will put new pictures on soon with the winter tyres fitted.

Deffo prefer the look of the facelift 1.4 SI
But cheapest at dealers is 11k.

Thats a good 3-4k more than my other choice 2009 1.4 EX
Do also fancy EX-T with satnav, but only private sellers at the mo.

Maybe slightly OTT - has anyone remapped their Jazz?
