Component Life
« on: November 13, 2013, 08:01:59 PM »
My GD CVT is seven years old and 50K miles,I have done 40K of those in the last four years since I bought it.
I am considering hanging on to it and was wondering if any forum users have had their Jazz for a long time.
What I am wondering, for example, is what is the life of the exhaust system and components such as suspension parts and body work.
There are lots of Jazz's locally, some on 02 plates and they look to be in pretty good nick.
My car is correctly serviced and gets an interim oil change at six months.

Well, I have just replaced the centre box and cat on my car, 2005/96k which were original Honda parts. The back box is a non-Honda replacement, but I don't know when it was replaced. The cat was ok but tired and the centre section was shot with pinholes so had to be replaced - both were 'welded' together so it was easier to replace the two bits. Reasonably easy except for 1 bolt on the down pipe that sheared and the remaining stud had to be drilled out, getting at it was a big problem, took ages.

I didn't do it but the car has new springs/shocks and new wishbones. Could do with droplinks as they chatter on bad roads, but handling is not impaired at present so will do in spring.

Bodywork is good, no rusting, floor is good too, underneath there is some superficial rusting on painted areas but I have waxoiled them for the winter and I am certain they will now last as long as needed.

A friend has an '03 model with low miles and it is immaculate all round. Still on most of its original fitments. Honda parts are good quality at factory and if you look after the car it will go on for a very long time.

I think our Brit car killer long term is the winter salt, do the Japs salt their roads?

I always think a good sign is the number of, say, 10 year old versions of any particular car you see around and you do see literally 100s of Jazzes in my area on 53 plates and below.

Recent "Warranty Direct" bulletin (figures based on actual repairs authorised by them) sees Jazz at numero uno for reliability.

Bought mine in June at 3 yrs old. Hoping to have it for many more years!

I am pretty sure Japanese do not salt their roads,  which is why early Jap cars suffered rust problems in UK.  The only parts I had to replace on my 53 plate (which I swapped just over 12 months ago for Civic) were brake pads (and front discs at 80K) , rear wheel bearing,  battery and tyres.    Didn't have to get gearbox bearing fixed because most of my mileage was main road and not using lower 3 gears a lot.  Watch out on GD for rear brake pipes just where they leave torsion beam and go into rear wheel,  they are well protected and plastic coated for most of their length but for some unknown reason Honda thought it was a good idea to strip off the plastic for last few inches and expose the steel pipe, and this has caused many MOT failures after 6 or 7 years.

Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

Remember short cold runs will reduce the life of your vehicle, better to hang on to your Jazz.

underneath items will always rust. best thing I have found to do if your keeping your car is just to get stainless steel exhaust made up. it can be done in sections, doesnt cost a whole lot more.

Tip no.2
Go to your local college which runs mechanic courses. you just buy the brake pipe / parts. fitting is free or just drop the lads which did it a few quid  :D
They wont destroy your car, if anything does go wrong the qualified teachers sort it for you, at their cost.
I know cos i once did it.  :D
