the rear cross-member you refer to may well be the torsion beam for the suspension - they do show some rust because when they flex (the way the suspension works) the paint probably gets displaced, but don't worry there is plenty of metal there.  also the last few winters we have had there has been plenty salt on the road which doesn't help.
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

My MOT mechanic said "all Japanese cars rust like that but it doesn't really matter". It does in the end but by then the car gets scrapped for a multitude of reasons, not just rust. The Japanese are masters of building things to a lifetime spec. Everything will wear out at once, hopefully not before about 10 years.

I am about to underseal mine with POR15 :). Well my mum's jazz, as we tend to keep cars for a long time!

Thanks

That of course is just rubbish. My 10 year old Yaris has zero rust. Lots of 15 -20 year old Toyotas still around.
