Possible new Jazz owner
« on: April 27, 2013, 08:57:07 PM »
Hi all,
My girlfriend is currently looking for her first car at 20 years old. She is pretty settled on Jazz's, but her fairly limited budget means we're restricted to fairly old, high mileage models, around 2002-2004 models, (ideally 04) and about 60-70k miles. An SE spec is essential, as S is too basic, however the insurance on the SE Sport is about £400 a year higher so that's out. A manual is preferred, however am automatic is not out of the question.

Are there any things I should be aware of? I also believe all Jazz's are chain driven, is this true?

Thanks in advance,
Minnis

Hello and welcome  8)

I'm sure other members will be on shortly to help answer your question re belt but i'm sure if you shop around, you'll be able to find some really good low mileage examples within your budget.

All the best.

Gary

Thanks :).
Indeed, we've seen quite a few already, and annoyingly seen two already that we've both loved and really considered, only to find out they were both sold on the day we viewed them! They seem to be going quick, those two both went within one or two days of being advertised.

Luckily I have a car so we can still get around, however a car would be ideal from September due to commuting to university. So we will continue looking until then. The right car will come along eventually!

around that age there will be quite a few Jazz in good condition,  but bear in mind they will be at the age to  need new exhaust system - on manual gearbox check if it is noisy (whining)  in lower 3 gears (I think 03 to 54 were affected by faulty batch of intermediate shaft bearings), and rear brake pipes (the last 3 or 4 inches before it goes into rear hub) may be corroded. Around the 10 year mark the anti-freeze will need changing as well.  Rear wheel-bearings may need attention (droning noise related to road speed rather than engine speed).

all Jazzes from 2002 onwards have chain driven camshaft

Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

Focus your search on the areas where the age demographic is predominantly retired.

They're a popular car among the older generation who will have looked after the servicing well and probably acquiesced to replacement part recommendations at that time. They'll also have been driven gently and will be predominantly low mileage as they will have been shopping and bingo runaround cars.

I bought mine from Southport for the reasons given above and got a better deal than I could find in Liverpool or Manchester.

check some used Hondas with your local Honda, but try get the newer than 04, as later cars may have improved more, ie trims been updated, better dash, and better brakes

Do these cars have a different stereo? If so, I have seen a few of those, but they're all at the upper end of the budget, so may not be able to get one. Low mileage is incredibly important, and we can probably get an 04 with 50-60K on the clock for our budget, and we don't really want to go any higher mileage.
Will bear that in mind if one comes up though, thanks! :).

after 04 the interior was upgraded to accord style neon dash, with outside temp showing on the dash, the cd player can accept a mp3 source using the aux, the handbrake has aluminium trim, better worth having them

Upgraded interior from 54 plate on 1.4-litre models only.
AUX-in only from around 2006 I think.
Some changes were made in early 2004 (04-plate) including rear disc brakes.

Do 2002-2004 pre facelift models have the outside temperature display? I once had a 53-plate SE Sport but I can't remember for sure (and I've binned the original brochure other than 2007 models!).

the pre facelift 2002 -04 didn't have a outside temp, they either had a cassette player and from 03 onwards some suspension changes and a cd player, I used to own 03 reg jazz
