Jazz ES- shift 1.4 i-VTEC 2010
« on: October 07, 2012, 09:47:06 AM »
Hi,

Our 2010 i-shift suffered a  auto box failure with loss of drive while overtaking on a busy road a month ago. The car had been in for the ishift recall three weeks previously. Luckily no-one was hurt. Our confidence is very shaken in this car- we hadn't loved the  ishift but it was ok.
We contacted Honda UK and they tell us they have no other reports of failures- is that credible? I mean surely some must have failed (if they sold enough). Apparently the fault was the "ECU" which I think is the main engine computer ? Do many of these fail?
I have the option of paying to change to a manual Jazz but  the dealer isn't exactly bending over backwards to help or make this cheap- £2000 cost to change from i-shift to manual for the same car. Would others think this is reasonable? I'm not sure if i shifts have such a bad rep they don't sell.
Sorry for long post but anxious and annoyed....

Why is it going to cost you anything? Surely the car is still under guarantee?
I had a 2010 Ex I-shift for a few months but could not get on with it, as it simply would not change gear when I wanted it to.
I part exchanged it in 2011 for a new EX CVT and am over the moon with it.
In my opinion the I-shift is only half an automatic and a very poor relation to the CVT.
So, my advice would be, insist that  the dealer puts the car right at no cost to you, contact Honda head office for assistance, if you have to.
Then in the long term think about a P/ex to a CVT, you won't regret it.

There should be no loss of drive as the gearbox is a manual, what has probably happened is the gearbox actuator has got confused and selected neutral instead of a gear, it could possibly be an ecu fault as the engine ecu controls the i-shift. If the dealer changes the ECU make sure that they also do the re learn procedures on the shift actuator, clutch actuator and the accelerator pedal. On the recall there is also a washer to be inserted to prevent the car getting stuck in reverse on certain affected gearboxes.

If the dealer isn't either helpful or knowledgeable try another, a good dealer should be able to fix it

Hope that helps

Thanks,

They have fixed it under guarantee and it seems to be working.. well as well as it ever did. It took three weeks to repair though!

The 2K is to part exchange for a manual which seems steep to me. I guess I could p/e to a CVT but probably at even more cost. I like the car but do I like it enough to spend upwards of 2K to basically get the same car without a gearbox Honda no longer puts in the car. I guess, I possibly do, but I can't help but feeling very unhappy as a customer.

I wondered if the proposed p/e was reasonable and if Honda have trouble shifting second hand i shifts (pun intended)

It has been sometime since I traded one car for another but I would guess the difference of 2K between the trade-in price and the showroom price is probably about right.

The £2k seems about right but you can always ask for a better deal against a car spec or colour the dealer has in the showroom, try another go this Friday evening.
Alternatively if you want to sell your Jazz then I can  recommend BCA sure sell - they will give you a price for your car -  there is no come back as with private buyers. Also several car brokers were offering around £800 off a Jazz list price last time I looked. You can then arm twist your favorite dealer .
As with all trade ins its the amount of your £ cash you hand across that matters

I have the i-shift and would NOT change it for the CVT. I have driven both and think the I-shift is far superior.
Acceleration and fuel economy are both better than the CVT.
Since it had it's recall I have noticed that the engine now starts instantly when you put  gear shift into neutral whereas there used to be a slight delay before recall.

i to have a i-shift which i am happy with [ once you get used to driving in a different way] i was sent a letter by honda uk regarding this recall so there must be issues with the gearbox but up to now my dealer hasn't been able to do the work even though i have been in 3 times for this job to be done ...they say that honda haven't sent the correct disk for the computer which i don't understand ..anyone else had this problem ?

Recall...What recall, My car takes about 4 to 5 seconds to start when put into N... Didn't know anything about a recall for it though, I phoned honda and they said.." If you have not received a letter, then your car is ok"   :o :(

I've just bought the wife an I shift and it drives a bit like our old smart does anyone know if
The box has an inhibitor switch as you can start mine in drive and it lurches forward which
Doesn't seem right our local dealer say it needs the recall but their machine is broken....

first it should not start in drive as you put it only in neutral with your foot on the brake ...it does sound like you have problem though ...i suggest you do what i did and phone honda direct they were very helpful with me ...
