Niggling noise
« on: June 17, 2012, 09:43:32 AM »
Hi

My Honda jazz appears to have developed a niggling noise which I cant put my finger on. The noise appears to be coming from around the front of the car. Its not all the time but it sounds like something to do with the suspension. Cant really explain it which I know is not much help.

The car does not make the noise all the time and its not obvious to hear if you drive with the window open. Have checked the tracking which seems ok and the noise does not occur when the wheel is on full wheel lock either way. Have looked under the car as best as I can and none of the mounts for the exhaust seem to have come away.

The wife has admitted to hitting the odd kerb when she parks the car - but as I say the tracking does not seem to be out.

Its noticeable on bumpy roads, cant say that its any worse over speed bumps.

People have mentioned in other posts about the rubber bushes at the back of the engine near the front anti roll bar as requiring a spray of silicone lubrication.

Not being the most technically minded of people was wondering - if it was the rubber bushes on the roll bar where they would be located / how easy to do?

Have noticed that when i get in the car on a hill there is the odd creaking sound that comes from the centre of the car  (though at 6ft / 12 st - I would not class myself as on the large side ..yet)

Cheers brapford.

I have this noise too. Did you ever solve it?

I don't think the original poster has been on the forum for 6 years, so I doubt you will get a response from them.

Can you be any more specific about the noise you have on your car?

Hard to describe but a creak that sounds like it comes from the front of the car, maybe the suspension and very faint! Doesn't replicate either if you lean on the front of the car whilst stationary, but sounds like it should!! Sorry to be so vague.

Just been for a drive, sounds a bit like someone rubbing/ cupping the top of a milk bottle....! That's the best description I could come up with.

Metallic knocking noises from the front suspension can usually be narrowed down to a few components, most likely a failing anti-roll bar drop link.

However, the noise you describe sounds more like something loose - it might be worth having a look under the front bumper in particular, to make sure none of the plastic undertray components are loose. Get hold of each part in turn and give it a wiggle, nothing should flap about. The clips with hold these in can break with age and/or drop out.

The circumstances when the noise appears might help you diagnose. Is it particularly on road bumps or potholes? Does it stop when braking?

Hello,

Thanks but so tricky unless you have the same noise I would imagine... It doesn't sound like something loose, but more like something under strain, hence the creak description. Probably something bush, suspension related....?...

I'm sure I read somewhere that this was common on a Jazz and this was confirmed by my local dealer. The poster who reported the same issue had his dealer try all their jazz's and they all did it! Now it seems its only mine  :-X

The only common Jazz creaky noise I can think of is the rear handbrake.

Bottom ball joints get creaky if they are seizing, and seizing top bush bearings when steering lock to lock. Inner anti-roll bar bushes can creak when worn, which eventually develops into a knock. There are lots of parts on the suspension which can make that sort of noise, I've even had a creaky shock absorber before.

My Jazz makes a noise and narrowed it down to the metal wire gasket that sits between the exhaust and manifold. I think i makes a squeak/rubbing noise when you joint the car in gear.

I had it replaced, noise went away but came back after a few weeks. Its something i live with now. Only happens when you change gear aggressively. Car passed MOT fine last week so i wont be touching it.

Hope this helps.

There are so many places a squeak or rattle can come from, the exhaust waggle is always a good start!

Funny you should say that. My Volvo passenger seat would sometimes squeak when it was occupied. I blamed it on my wife's joints!
