Any advice on fixing Air Con?
« on: March 10, 2012, 11:24:59 PM »
Just picked up late 2002 Jazz and discovered a/c doesn't work despite sellers claims..any advice on checking whether it just needs re-gassing and typical costs if its not etc..
Thanks

Re-gassing will just make the cold air, colder and drier. Is there any element of coldness, does it blow various temperatures??

If air coming out of vents is being cooled at all, it means their is some gas in the system and  you can get a re-gas kit from Halfords or similar and pump in required amount of gas.

If the air coming out of vents is no colder than ambient - first it needs checking to see if there is any gas pressure on low pressure side of aircon (blue cap at middle of LH side of engine bay - between EGR valve and fusebox)  it there is no pressure at all you need professional help because if gas has been missing for a while you can get water and corrosion in there.

Because Honda do not fit a protective mesh in cooling air intake in front bumper it is possible to have a stone fly in there and puncture the Aircon heat exchanger (or the main engine radiator)  :(
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

First of all make sure the fan switch is not set to 'off',this turns the aircon off.
Make sure the outside temperature is above 3 or 4C,below this the aircon is shut down to protect the evaporator was freezing up.
Check that the air con compressor is cutting in and out,it is on the right hand side of the engine and the noise is very obvious even from inside the car.
If the system needs regassing then the compressor will not operate.
If it isn't then the system needs more professional attention.
Do not simply re-pressurise it using a Halfords kit because there is a danger of over pressurising the system and in any case does the Halfords gas include the lubricant that is essential to the well being of system?
Preferably the system needs putting on an aircon test rig and evacuating and regassing with leak detector included in it.
The car,if from a dealer, automatically has a six months warranty in accordance with the Sale of Goods Act,so if you are sure the aircon doesn't work take the car back.
If the dealer refuses to cooperate threaten them to take the case to the CAB for advice.
Cost to fix a simple regassing job is about £75 but try and find someone by recommendation.
Where do you live Moose?

If it is re gassed it should have a fluorescent dye marker included in the gassing cocktail.  Then if there is a slow leak, it can be located with a UV light.  Don't waste money on home-brew AC gassing - it is too specialised a task.

Good advice from VicW.

Kwik fit do aircon recharge for about £45 they suck out the old gas etc and run atest for leaks and then add the gas with some lubricant. And it's guaranteed to work or you don't pay.
If you hear the fans come on when you turn aircon on then system is working, they will go off and come back on when needed to cool aircon rad down. (I think)..  ::)

Thanks for the advice - I am near Watford. I think the system has more major problems as I cant detect the compressor coming on, and there is no change in the temperature of the air coming through the vents. Can Kwitfit sort the whole system?

No they won't fix it as such, just regas to see if that will help. The compressor won't kick in unless there is gas in the system. So it could be a very small leak or something worse..
