injector cleaner.Waste of money?
« on: March 02, 2012, 06:53:34 PM »
Cars running a little rough at low revs(see my other post for more details),so I thought stick some injector cleaner in fuel tank to see if it sorts it out.
Cost £5.99 for 350ml of Wynns  injector cleaner.Instructions say to add to full tank but I figured the more concentrated the solution is the better it will work,so when my fuel light came on and fuel gauge eventually was on red line I stuck the whole bottle in and drove for a mile or two at high revs to get the cleaner around the fuel lines etc.Filled up with shell optimax.
No difference what so ever to running problems.
Still stutters and coughs like an old man in a bookies at low revs.
So looks like £5.99 might as well be chucked down the nearesr drain. :(
Gonna change sparkplugs tomorrow to see if that works.
Also seems to be worse with aircon on and lights on etc. :o
Has anyone else used this kind of injector cleaner with good results?

I`ve never used injector cleaner but I believe you should take the whole air cleaner out and check if the throttle valve area clean (check the small hole at the bottom there), sometimes oil deposits can build up there (use carburettor cleaner to clean it).

Changed airfilter other day.Never thought about spraying carbcleaner in there. Are there no sensors that might get upset if I go squirting chemicles on them like mafs and temp?

No, you cannot make damage on the sensors but I meant to take the whole air housing out not only the lid.

Here is the throttle body, that should be clean.

Oh yeah, know what you mean now.Is it worth keeping the engine running whilst spraying carbcleaner in throttle body?

No, I would not do that wipe the dirt with a cloth. Before you buy a cleaner have a look (if it`s dirty).

Manufacturers don't put instructions on products for fun - injector cleaner is meant to work slowly to dissolve fuel varnish from the system. Most cleaners are based on Kerosene and your engine isn't designed to run on it, that's why it has to be diluted in a full tank of petrol.  I have used injector cleaner in the past and it seemed to work,  but now I just fill up with Ultimate or Optimax every other tank to keep things clean.  Have you checked EGR as the symptoms at low revs fit in with a Jammed EGR valve.
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

Injectors are cleaned with ultrasounds. Go to a Bosch service.
Don't waste money with anything else.
