I bought a second hand, unused (the only way I would buy one) spacesaver for my EX. The wheel had never been fitted on a car.

I didn't want to use the TRK as you always need a new tyre. Lots of other manufacturers are going down this route too...and it's all down to cost at our expense.

Had to use the spare once as I had a puncture. The only issue I found is that the VSA light illuminated with a spacesaver fitted. Once the repaired tyre and wheel was put on all fine again.

As a space saver is no good for driving test purposes, I thought I would enquire along the lines of purchasing another alloy wheel, however I have been quoted £360 just for the wheel  :o :o

I am now thinking that the Corsa wheels are the same dimensions so it looks like a steel Corsa wheel will be the answer.

There is a business opportunity for someone to supply spare wheels and tyres to Jazz GE owners. Some time ago I was considering an Audi A2 but ruled it out due to the lack of spare tyre.

Although in 2009 I bought a Jazz ES which came with no spare or space saver, although I knew this before I bought I have never really been comfortable with not having a spare.

Two weeks after taking delivery of my previous car a new Peugeot 307 I had to have a new tyre fitted because a screw caused a puncture, at least I had a spare at the time.

Here's the deal I have just bought a set of Honda Jazz EX Alloy wheels 16" x 6J , 3 of wheels are for sale let me have your best offers by the weekend. The wheel does fit into the wheel well without any humps in the boot. Photos below to show

At 12,000 miles/year I can't remember when I last had a 'tyre-incident' (p'raps the next one may be memorable!). Motorists changing a tyre are very rare... at least as far as I can observe on my about average annual miles travels. Are tyres more puncture-resistant than they used to be even a few years ago?

No spare wheel PROS in my opinion: More boot space (significant); less 'dead' weight; no frustration at 'impossibly tight' wheelnuts (though a pipe extension to the handle of the supplied 'spanner' can provide much more leverage... or buy a wheelbrace); no protracted tyre-changing in a risky road traffic situation (most importantly, of course, that one); no retrieving spare from under a bootload while pouring with rain.

CONS: Questionable (albeit very slight) reliability of 'gunk' for common punctures; no solution for a blowout,  a sidewall slash or a 'too large' hole in the tread...  (in case of these, albeit rare, instances subscribing to a road rescue service is a necessity IMO); low-speed onward travel for limited miles on a 'gunked' tyre which may be rejected by a tyre fitter and/or require renewal... and, of course,  there's the obverse of the preceding PROS.

Instead of a spare, I carry Holts Tyreweld (you must have seen it advertised) which I will use instead of the Honda-supplied gunk in my boot. National Tyres and Autocare, for one, stock the Holts stuff and claim that they will not reject a 'repairable' Holts-filled tyre. (It requires simply a warm water washout.) Holts Tyreweld at £10-15 is considerably less expensive than the Honda stuff. You could buy it here:
http://www.national.co.uk/tyre-weld.aspx  or there are various other suppliers online.

Also, here's a good video demo of the application, advantages and limitations of Continental Tyres 'gunk' which can be bought with/without its associated compressor... £70/£20 thereabouts.

Hmm, my situation is a bit more severe, I do around 30k miles a year, but if I get a puncture just before one of some 60 tests a year, apart from paying for a new tyre £45-£50, I would need to refund the booking fee £62, and probably supply a few free lessons to pacify a frustrated pupil, so a puncture could easily cost me £200 if badly timed.

In saying that I have only ever had one test related puncture, but I have always had a spare available, and I'm not willing to risk it.

Ozzie... your situation is completely understandable. It all depends on one's personal circumstances and associated perceived risk.  Your annual mileage compared to mine means your risk of incident is almost three times mine and then there's your potential for financial loss as you have outlined... and harm to reputation, too, I'd imagine. ("The instructor didn't even carry a spare..." or suchlike.) An altogether different risk profile to mine.

A thought... do you know about this stuff? I read somewhere that Royal Mail delivery vehicles use it to minimise tyre-related downtime and consequent disruption to their delivery schedules.

Other than Oz, anyone had experience with it?

Thanks for the link.

I don't tend to pick up nails and screws, pupils tend to catch the kerb occassionally at speed, and it just slices through the sidewall, so nothing will save the tyre. I know it sounds dramatic, but I have only lost 2 tyres that way in 16 years and 500,000 miles sitting beside learners, so the ratio isn't too bad but its always the ones you start to trust that surprise you.

Have also gone down the winter tyre route but keeping the originals, one original wheel under boot as a spare.  Managed to get a space saver thrown in on purchase but that's now obsolete.  Olduser1, what winters you going for?  Bought a set of Conti T810s along with 2 extras, means when fronts wear out at twice the rate of the rears I have the same pattern on all corners.  Now fitted as cold enough up north. :)

The 1st choice tyre at present -  Bridgestone Blizzak based upon premium brand German Test reports and some feedback from Fit owners is USA.
The range of tyres in 185 55 16 for winter use is few at present.
The tyres are £95 here and $108 in USA typical

I'm certainly miffed about the lack of spare - I didn't want to pay extra for it (don't feel I should have to) and just plum forgot about it when doing the deal.

I also wish Honda hadn't chosen a rare size for the 16" wheels - 185/55R16 are thin on the ground and are expensive.  Something I'll check for when buying cars in the future.

I did get an additional set of 15" wheels and put those on with winter tyres yesterday.  Found one of the existing fronts has a screw right through the centre of the tread!
