Clutch given out without warning
« on: August 21, 2011, 04:17:46 PM »
Hi

Was wondering if anyone had come across a similar situation whereby the clutch has gone without any real warning or the odd slip beforehand. I last drove the car (Honda Jazz 1.4DSI SE - 49K mileage) on Monday and thought the clutch pedal was a little on the high side. As I hardly drive it (my better half does) but put it down to not driving it down to just not being familar with the car. My wife drove the car yesterday and it gave out on a major A road - would not go into gear or anything.

The AA have said the clutch has gone, but as we did not get any pre warning was wondering if this had happened to anyone else. Was wondering whether as its a gear problem it might have something to do with the gearbox bearings? I dont think the clylinders could have gone in the clutch as the pedal isnt to the floor in the car (but then I know next to nothing about cars).

If anyone could give me a heads up would appreciate it.

I had this once years ago on a Citroen BX. The clutch plate broke basically. I replaced the clutch (myself) and discovered a rather large bolt was Not There - one of only four that held the clutch bell-housing to the engine. This meant the clutch was not aligned properly and promoted its catastrophic demise.
It is though I think a rather unusual occurrence. When a clutch wears out it is somewhat gradual, and you would notice it slipping on full power first. Some people have a very bad habit of holding the car stationary on a hill on the clutch. It gets hot very quickly and as well as wearing out the friction linings it cooks the internal springs.
Other than that I have no Jazz-specific advice.
