Few questions regarding my jazz

Hi there,

I'm new to the Honda Jazz (I have a 2003 model, 1.3 CVT-7) and as much as I love it, there are 1 or 2 things i'd like to ask beause I don't know too much about them;

1. The left buttons on the steering don't seem to do anything. Are they for volume or simply decoration?

2. I think I have a noisy wheel bearing, is this something that I can get Honda to do under warranty?

3. Only the front cabin light works when I open the doors, aren't the back lights meant to work too?

4. I have a noticeable slight tappety sound from the engine when cold, but I've also noticed that this engine is louder then any other cars i've driven (always had a 5 series or C-class), is this just how they are?

5. Is there a DIY step-by-step guide on changing the CVT oil? I bought the oil from honda last week and i'd like to change it asap for a piece of mind.

Hello and welcome.

1. I think with CVT models you can change gear using the buttons on steering wheel? I'm not sure, but it won't be anything to do with the radio, at least not on a 2003 car. Only the post-September 2004 facelift cars have audio controls on the steering wheel.

2. Yes, although your 2003 car might be borderline as I think the cut off is at seven years old. I think you need a full service history from a Honda dealer too, either way though it is worth a try and see what they say. Read more here: http://clubjazz.org/forum/index.php?topic=304.0

3. Not sure as I think my 2007 Jazz has a different interior light arrangement to my previous 53plate car. On mine the front ones are reading lights.

5. Changing the CVT oil is just a case of draining the old oil and replacing with new. With the front of car raised locate the transmission drain plug. Unscrew and drain the oil. Replace with a new sealing washer and tighten to the correct torque. Lower the car and remove the transmission dipstick and add the correct amount of oil. Start the car and move the selector into all positions and then shift into P with handbrake on let the car warm up until the radiator fan comes on and goes off. Then turn off the engine and check the fluid level.

Re the steering wheel, I have 3 buttons in total, 2 on the right and 1 on the left. On the right hand side, 1 is to activate the 7 speed mode and the other is a + - sign which lets me shift the gears up and down and I understand that. But what I don't understand is the button the left, what is it supposed to do? It has a + - sign but it really doesn't seem to be doing anything? Any advice from owners of car of this era is much appreciated.

Thanks for the advice re the CVT oil change. I'm hoping its as easy as that as you say it is, i've read up on the net as much as I can and it seems as simple as you say it is. On my BMW it was a BIG HEADACHE to change it, as it held just over 8 litres of fluid and I had to do it over 2 intervals to get it.

I also suggest you buy the Haynes manual on the Jazz, covers everything you need to know and more............
