New flashing red light in dash
« on: October 16, 2026, 08:04:02 AM »
It’s a “new” flashing red LED just to the top left of the speedo, it flashes for ~10 seconds slowly after locking the car.  Happens with both keys.  When I say this is a new light, I’ve had the car since 2011 and never noticed it, nor has Mrs DSL.

Trying to attach a pic but not getting anywhere.

Internet suggests this is normal but strange it’s just appeared, and it’s in your face bright, no way I’d have missed that for 15 years!

Thoughts?

OK, may have gotten to the source of this light.  Put the car on the CTEK charger and the light stopped flashing on locking.  Low battery warning of some sort?  Might be time to treat her to a new battery.

Will see tomorrow what happens tomorrow when I take her off charge.

Could also indicate a problem with the alternator or the serpentine belt.

Hi

This light shows cat is fully locked

It has nothing to do with battery charger but I understand why you thought that.

If you ensure all car doors boot and bonnet are fully closed and press lock button twice, the red light starts to flash

If you then unlock the car and pull the bonnet release but do not open the bonnet and press the lock button twice the red light does not light

Fully shut the bonnet and press lock button twice if starts to flash

Many thanks

John

That LED is the security indicator for the alarm. It only flashes once the alarm is fully armed, so it can come and go if the system thinks a door, the boot or the bonnet isn't shut. A weak battery can upset the bonnet and door switch readings too, which might be why charging changed things. Worth putting a meter on the battery after it has sat overnight. Anything under about 12.4 volts at rest says it is tired. Also check the bonnet switch near the catch for dirt or corrosion, as that is the one most likely to stop it arming.
