RDMS switches off and on
« on: October 07, 2026, 03:45:11 PM »
Our 2024 Honda Jazz switches off the RDMS, the limiter etc sometimes when it rains. This causes all the switched off functions to display orange on the screen and an alarm to sound. It advises my screen needs cleaning. Within seconds it returns to normal then it will alarm again. The constant flashing screen and alarm are distracting. Last week it happened at night in clear weather. The only factor may have been the full moon! Maybe its haunted. It is really spoiling our enjoyment of an otherwise good car.
Has anyone else experienced these problems?

Are you running the aircon all the time ?

It has been posted that moisture and mist can get into the front camera housing and running the aircon, even in winter, can help dry the cabin air so the front camera doesn't get affected
Let's be careful out there !

Full moon would mean a clear sky and a low temperature of the windscreen (sometimes even 4 degrees below ambient; that’s why it freezes up easily). So it seems a bit of condensate within the camera.

As mentioned, airconditioning would help, or a bit of heated air from the defogging vents. It should be gone after a longer drive and in different weather condition.

Thanks for the advise. Not sure what the aircon status was at the times it happened. As the area where the camera is appears to be sealed why does it mist up?

From previous posts it appears that the seals often allow the ingress of moisture, although mine never has on the HR-V

Agreed.  I leave mine on all year round.

After many years of just having basic , manual, A/C  I had got in the mindset that it was only for hot weather. (and even then Mrs LV preferred opening a window. )

I agree, having climate control set all year round and just  let it do its thing  is the best option. It illustrates the other big advantage of A/C . In cooler weather it dehumidifies the car and clears condensation much more quickly. It minimises how often and for how long the RDMS and other safety features   have to shut themselves down  because ice , condensation etc  around its sensors is corrupting the reliability of the signals they are receiving .    Even with climate control  this may take a while to clear when setting off in frosty or damp  weather and can be affected at any time  by dirt, squashed bugs (eg moths) or heavy rain etc. . My RDMS occasionally shuts itself  down for a few minutes if signals from the side of the road are confusing and nebulous. Such as long waving grass obscuring the actual road edge.

I keep climate control on by default  but will sometimes switch it off in ideal weather conditions. This does save a bit of fuel. The car will go into EV mode more readily  in stop start traffic after a cold start.   But having a window  open also increases drag, and there therefore  fuel consumption. Probably by a similar amount as having climate control active.
And A/C benefits from  being used regularly all year round . Use it or lose it.

I can accept that the systems may shut down for periods if the signals are not  sufficiently reliable. Better that than giving a false sense of security.
But as others may point out some car makers  include duplicated and back up systems using lidar and radar sensors that are less affected by weather conditions  . But these sensor types have their own limitations, and add to cost.
My IQ test came back negative

I've had this on occasions also, it seems mainly to be at night in cold/damp conditions, as others have said it's probably caused by condensation in the camera area at a time when visibility is impaired by darkness. I just wipe the area at the top of the windscreen and it goes back to normal after a short period or when in daylight.

The other thing, posted on many car forums, is turning off AC can prematurely cause the seals to deteriorate/rot
Let's be careful out there !
