It's unlikely that Duracell make CR2032s themselves.

Agreed about checking the expiry date on the packet. Lidl's "Tronic" ones are usually only a couple of years. Genuine Panasonics are typically ten years or more.

I have a blue LED which I use to check lithium coin cells. It has a forward voltage of nearly 3V, which means that it is compatible with the coin cell voltages. (Red LEDs typically have a forward voltage of 2V and aren't suitable.)

I straddle the coin cell with the leads of the LED (it only works one way round). If the LED lights brightly, the cell is good for use in the key fob. If it doesn't, it's only good for use in a clock or watch.

The key fob needs to draw a lot of current for a very short amount of time. Cheaper coin cells can't provide that.

And definitely avoid Duracell AA batteries (and Costco's own brand which appears to be Duracell with a different wrapping). I've had them leak in an unopened packet, stored indoors in a drawer, with more than a year left on the expiry label.

Conversely, I've never had Lidl's own brand AA batteries leak (...yet).

Oh, you as well, I had a Duracell AA leak inside a wall clock even though the battery was under a year old with a 2035 expiry on the pack

Think I'll switch to Energizer
Let's be careful out there !

There once was a time where I specifically bought "Dura"cell batteries "because they never leak" - right?
Nowadays: Almost everything you can buy is "better" than Duracell (at least regarding leak-proofness)!

Well, "management" and "share-holder-value" have taken "good" care of this feature!
My consequence: I won't ever buy this brand again and whenever I come across OEM "bunny batteries" in a new device they wander directly into the recycling bin!
(whenever possible, I'm now powering my devices by either Panasonic "Eneloop" NiMH or Verico Li-Ion rechargable batteries)
