Joying unit

Hi,

My Wife's 2007 Mk1 Jazz, having done 210K miles with only the aircon compressor needing attention,is at the moment sorned, this due to me having to replace the rear axle that was way past its sell by date, pic attached. It will be going to get MOT tested shortly-- underside derusted to the best of my ability!

With the best days of that incredible car in the past it was decided that another Jazz was the way to go, hence, a one owner 2017 Mk3 with full service history and 10K on the clock was purchased. The car really is as new, however, it came with Chinese ditch finder tyres which have been replaced by a far better brand.

This is a petrol manual version and is non navi which initially didn't cause any concern. Its well documented that the installed infoentertainment system is the pants, so its my intention to replace it with an Android Joying unit. This, as my wife would like a heads up display of a satnav, rather than relying on her smart phone.

I've spent numerous hours on the internet looking at various sellers, which as far as I can see are in China, even though in the adverts some of the items are in the UK, which is dubious. Could anybody who has purchased a unit from China please let me know of a reputable dealer who they were happy with?

I'm afraid I can't help regarding the Joying unit, but would be interested to know how  you went about replacing the rear axle as our 53 plate car is going for it's MOT on Wednesday and I just know that eventually rust is going to be an issue on all old cars.

How did you source another one, how did you find it came out, have you addressed the bushes etc.

Replacing the axle is not a difficult job; however, working from the driveway and dealing with corroded fittings isn't without its issues. You will need a helper to lower the axle and also to replace it back into its locating lugs.

As with everything, safety first-you will see I have elevated my wife's shopping trolley by using a homemade ramp; the removed rear wheels have been placed under the sills on either side just in case! The car is in gear with front wheels chocked.

I removed the rear silencer box and detached the fuel filler pipe. With the fuel tank being over half full, I decided not to drain the fuel out but moved the filler pipe out to the side of the car. There is a rubber connecting tube which allows this.

Disconnecting the brake pipe unions was a bit of a challenge, I had to resort to using a gas lamp on the unions along with a dedicated union spanner with a set of mole grips to prevent rounding off the connectors. I used a welding blanket placed in the correct positions during the heating process. Your choice regarding the fuel pipe and naked flames!

It's very logical what needs to be removed to lower the axle away from the car.

I obtained a replacement axle from Ebay, £80- however Parcel Force lost it!

Another axle was found from a breakers' yard, which arrived with its original ABS sensors still in place. I removed these and installed new ones to be on the safe side. Brake pipe work was removed from the old axle, cleaned, and moved over to the new one.

To replace new sensors, I had to destroy the originals. There is no way around this as everything was seized.

The trailing arms bushes on the new axle were left alone as I couldn't determine any movement in them.

With the axle out, I spent many hours to derust the rear of the car. With things derusted I applied  neutrarust 661.

Offering the axle back into its locating lugs is a faff but with a helper at one end and yourself at the other its quite straight forward. Insert a long-bladed screwdriver in one end to support the axle when you deal with the other end.

I dealt with the ABS connectors after the axle was in place.

Axle2 pic is from the original corroded item, this the ABS sensor pickup hole and sheared mounting bolt. This now on its way to make razor blades somewhere.

That's brilliant. Thank you for that, it really is helpful.

I've been wondering about using one from a breaker, but figure that I would have to replace the bushes as they're going to be of a similar age.

However, there is also an aftermarket axle which costs £325 on eBay, so that could also be an option as it already has the new bushes and won't have any corrosion at all. By the time I look into the cost of bushes and a tool to press them in with and the second hand axle, then the costs start to get closer and closer.

Getting the various nuts and unions undone is going to be a problem though.

Did you find that the two large bolts that go through the bushes came out without too much of a struggle?

Your local garage ought to be able to replace the bushes that you have bought from the web. Cant see that costing very much.

Main mounting bolts were no issue. Get some penetrating fluid and a set of quality drills, its more than likely that something may shear off. Heat is your friend here.

You may have to re tap a hole or two.

Tester mentioned the handbrake isn't the best, but that's always been the case with this car.

My efforts with the axle replacement have proved fruitful.

I looked at fitting something like a Joying unit.
But we decided we wanted to keep the CD player.

So bought one of these instead

Put it to the left of the instruments in a reasonably flat spot.
It works fine, connects to the phone quite quickly.
Had to run a Aux cable to the radio.
The touch screen is a bit hit and miss.
Can stream music ok.
There are some apps on it.
Fitted the rear view camera, its black and white, it would be quite easy to upgrade this if you want to.
Will take a photo and post that later today.
For the £38 it is ridiculous value.

Our 2003 Jazz came with the original stereo / CD player, which always looked like it would be a big problem to update with anything more modern given the very curved and specific mounting of the unit in the dash.

A couple of years ago, I took it out to repair the common voltage regulator fault, and while it was out, I fitted a small, dedicated Bluetooth circuit board to the AUX input and as this neatly fits inside the  stereo space, there are no trailing wires to get everywhere, and that neatly ticked the Bluetooth box at very little cost.

To give ourselves a sat nav option, I bought a magnetic phone holder which firmly sticks to one of the few flat areas on the dash and now gives us a tidy place to attach the phone, and it really does work and almost looks "factory fitted".

I know that everyone has their own satnav favourites, but two of my favourites are the ones that use the Open Street Maps to work. Osmand is probably my favourite, but Organic Maps is well worth a look as you can download maps for the entire world to it freely.
It was created by one of the originators of Maps.Me and is lightweight, absolutely no ads, totally free and works completely offline.

I'm currently trying to work out how to mount a Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 securely in place, and am considering a CD drive slot mounting attachments, but we don't really need it, to be honest as the phones work really well on the holder.
