2016 Jazz vs 2011/2012
« on: August 05, 2026, 12:59:50 PM »
Cheers everyone,

I'm new here and looking to get a new (to me) jazz as my daily driver. I've been looking at both Mk3's and Mk2's and I'm wondering if you experts might weigh in on which they'd rather have? Primarily looking for something that'll last me a long time. Would mostly be used for road trips and driving around town, I don't drive to commute.

Hi
Personally I would go for the MK3. I had an ex very nice car, couldn't fault it.
Didn't have a MK2, l skipped that version, can't remember why I didn't like it.
All the best for your car hunting.

There has been many threads about this during the years. I would prefer older generation, because they don't have so much those annoying warnig/assistance features disputing driver's command of the car, which are mandatory in newer cars.

Some Mk 3 have built in sat nav.  These can be identified by the word NAVI in the model description

However the last update for the sat nav was 2023.  Garmin stopped providing updates because the memory in the sat nav is too small to store the later maps.  (some late model 2019 Mk 3 may have a larger memory and can be updated)

Do not be put off buying a NAVI model if you like it,  but do not pay a premium price just for the sat nav alone

That's very interesting, I didn't know that. For me satnav is a very nice feature, since I dislike having to use my phone for everything navigation-wise, and I never know if the area I'm going to will have decent enough internet access to actually enable navigation.

We have a 2012 Jazz EX, bought it 3 weeks ago. It replaced our 2024 Renault Clio. We were fed up with all the bings and bongs, so it had to go. You could disable a lot of them by pressing a coded button every time you got in the car BUT it did not stop all af them. So it had to GO. Decided on a 2012 because it is silent. Did not look at the 2016 plus, we thought it might disappoint us.
We have kept the old radio and connected a 7" screen that mirrors Android Auto. Works brilliant was only £37 and has a reversing camera. Will be fitting this shortly.

That's very interesting, I didn't know that. Do you know if there is any way to deduce if the model is a NAVI or not based on VIN or other public data?

It will be something like:
2018 Honda Jazz i-vtec 1.3 EX Navi
https://www.vertumotors.com/used-car/4170499/honda-jazz-1.3-i-vtec-ex-navi-5dr-cvt-petrol-hatchback/?tr=&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=*Vertu_Pmax_Vehicle+Feeds_Low&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21918560820&gclid=CjwKCAjw4dDTBhAqEiwAkHYmSoF6ZeksVuokxP6caAcGSWJsyWMxRXbhIDEbTUML8eRHXH_5uaJ-

As compared to
https://www.vertumotors.com/used-car/4159669/honda-jazz-1.3-i-vtec-ex-5dr-cvt-petrol-hatchback/?tr=&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=*Vertu_Pmax_Vehicle+Feeds_Low&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21918560820&gclid=CjwKCAjw4dDTBhAqEiwAkHYmSm0jZewH05yyvQ9aHvNtJ5Y5-
Which has no NAVI.

You can still Bluetooth your phone into it and it will give directions over the speakers. You could also just get a phone holder and have it in a place you can see so you can see live traffic data.
Alternatively, you can buy a modern Android Play or Apple Car Play screen and just mount it on the dashboard for long journeys. This way you can mirror your phone screen.
Finally, you could change the whole head unit, but if you are getting any warranty on your vehicle from Honda, make sure this doesn't void the warranty.
There are many ways of getting over this hurdle and not all cost a lot. Do not negate a non NAVI.

Thanks, that's a great example, and good arguments for not going just for a navi model. I've found that I can get a decent 2019 model for about 3,000 EUR more than a 2011-2016 model with similar miles. Would you go for that or stick to the older ones?

It depends how much the gimmicks in the new model annoy you, or do you even want those. Typically miles are not killing Jazz, it's rust. So look at the botton, sills, floors. That's more important than miles.

This is so true. Actually, the more research I have done, the more I have found that average or slightly higher milage is better.
I have just bought a 2018 sport manual with around average milage. The engine is built to be throttled a bit. Gentle low milage doesn't do it any real good.

And yes, rust. I know, I have taken a punt on quite an orange looking underneath, but, well let's just see how bad it truly is.

Only thing I am going to get added is front and rear dash cams, after my accident, and rear parking camera, not for my parking, bit for jay walkers in car parks 😂

Myself i have been around long enough that i just needed to look ar a map if it was somewhere hundreds of miles away. I got rid of a couple of years old car that had more gadgets than you could shake a stick. Adaptive headlights at a grand each, adaptive cruise, heated steering wheel, best one to have along with the seats, parked it's self, i could go on and i never used most of them. So on retirement i bought a 14 plate Jazz EX Mk2 over two years ago and then i relaxed. I could have bought the latest shape but i thought no i'll get a well tested model that was proven and fairly gadget free. Never looked back. Still some lovely very low mileage Mk2's about but comparable to the later cars in price almost, says to me the Mk2 is more popular, your thoughts

In all fairness, when I had an MOT and service one day, I was given a beautiful blue mk2 Jazz by the garage, for the day. Drove as well as my mk1 Jazz, liked the climate control and had a bit more power.
Only reason I overlooked the mk2 this time is my mk1 suffered water ingress both in the boot and from the windscreen. But with attention a mk2 can be a brilliant car. Agreed less gubbins than mk3 and definitely loads less than the mk4.

Definitely don't worry about mileage.
My MK1 got to 150k miles with no engine faults. It only ever needs spark plugs and alternator belt.

Same with my MK3 its currently on 106k miles and absolutely no issues apart from spark plugs and alternator belt, oh and Aircon pump/condenser.
The civics from the same period have dodgy Aircon pumps and I wouldn't be surprised if the jazzes have the same weakness.

Most of my driving is commuting, sat on A roads or motorway. So very little Engine stress,

I recently bought my first Jazz, and went for a mk2. Part of the reason was cost, but, as others have said, the other key reason was that the mk2 has the perfect amount of tech for me. It's a little simpler and easier to maintain, and it has fewer potential points of failure. I think some of the newer features on the mk3 would have annoyed the hell out of me.

I'm curious, specifically which annoying features are you thinking of? I also detest intrusive electronics in a car, so I'd love to hear what stuff the mk3 carries with it that might be annoying.
