new tyre and the TPMS
« on: July 05, 2026, 03:23:23 PM »
Hello,  My Honda Jazz was first registered end of March 2016, so not sure what TPMS it has ( sensors in the wheels or something else?)  and I may need to get  a new tyre  fitted  soon by Halfords/Kwikfit or similar, so any idea if  I will also  need special valve or other compnent replaced too and do I need to do anything  on the dashboard ( resetting or ??) after the new trye is fitted. Sorry for these basic questions but this TPMS technology is all new to me. Thanks

GK Jazz, i.e. 3rd gen tyre pressure monitoring is done by wheel rotational speed monitored by ABS wheel sensors. Therefore you don't need to buy any sensors when replacing a tyre. You just need to re-initialize the system according to the instructions in user manual.

The initialization is also discussed in this thread, see posts 27-29. https://clubjazz.org/forum/index.php?topic=18095.15

But because of that sensing method you may get false alarms if you get just one new tyre, because the rolling circuit is bigger than in the old tyres.

In addition, you will most likely have to re-initialise a few times as the single tyre beds in and the tyre wall softens

In my case on a 8G Civic I had to do it straight away because the Honda dealer didn't, tben again at about 100 and 300 miles
Let's be careful out there !

… you may get false alarms if you get just one new tyre …

The handbook says you should replace tyres in pairs (it actually recommends replacing all four, but that’s a bit OTT). Although if those are the original 2016 tyres they’re at the end of their life anyway so you ought to be looking at replacing all of them even if they are low mileage.

Yes, pairs are the way to go

In my case the car had only done about 2k to 3k miles so I considered a pair overkill

I'd suggest rotating tyres and replacing all four at once.

And regarding the age, I wouldn't be worried about 10 years age if there are no visible surface cracks.
