CVT ratios
« on: Today at 09:18:41 AM »
Second shot at appropriate Board. I have long owned a low mileage 2002 CVT Jazz. I often have very heavy load and negotiate a 1: 5 drive and encounter short steeper ones. In normal ratio works fine. In low ratio acts like a car with chronic clutch slip. If just the clutch pack, not a worry but is it the chain  slipping? Contaray to logic the normal ratio seems best.Any experts to advise?
Impressed by the car. 45pg+ true on trips laden. Somewhat harsh ride cured by inflatable cushion. Dead steering which needs conscious correction.

Low ratio keeps the revs higher. I would use it only for extra engine braking when going downhill. Uphill I like the normal ratio better, because it lets you use engine torque and it keeps revs fairly low. The low ratio tends to keep revs too high. It is not a clutch slipping but it certainly feels like that!
