Intermittent shake,rattle,noise
« on: May 20, 2026, 04:58:51 PM »
Hi  all, please can you have a listen to this video. You may need to turn it up.

When foot not on accelerator pedal there's a kind of rattle sound from the engine. Can hear it when idling but as soon as you press the pedal, however lightly, it stops. It's not a loud rattle, but its there. The sound is there as soon as this vid starts but you will see I gently touch the accelerator and it stops, coming back when I step off.

Someone suggested possible loose exhaust heat shield?

I've just had an MOT and this was picked up ...

"Central front exhaust has a minor leak of exhaust gases, joint blowing very slightly".

Does that tie in?

Aaaah, no, it's not the shield around the Cst at all. I took it to a garage, they removed the corroded metal and never bothered testing anything. After a while I realised that the rattle is still there. Went to another garage and they said the cat was rattling inside, needs replacing. Best place to get this done? I have no skills to be buying one on eBay and all that jazz, do need garage.

When our original cat was pinched, I fitted an aftermarket one bought from eBay and it's been as good as gold.

If you do have another one fitted, make sure you get the old one back ..... there's a good reason why they're pinched and that is that they're worth a lot of money.

A couple of years ago,I got £120 each for two old Porsche Boxster cats just from a local scrapyard, about twice as much as the EEC replacements cost

It's a pretty easy job to replace them, with just two bolts at the manifold that need to be undone and they don't seem to rust. It's the corroded nuts where the cat meets the exhaust pipe that are problematic.

Much easier with a ramp ... in fact I wouldn't want to try it without one
