i-Shift Failure

Have read about this problem but cannot find any specific details so am posting in the hope that my worst fears have not been realised.

Not experienced any difficulties with the car in the past four plus years but on Tuesday on the way back from a local shopping trip I stopped at a major roundabout and waited for a gap in the traffic. As soon as it was safe to proceed I pressed the throttle and all that happened was that the engine revs increased! Only by pressing the throttle to the floor could I get the car to slowly creep forward.

Cutting a long story short it seems that my clutch/gear actuator has failed without warning. Having safely reached home and turned the ignition off I now cannot even get the engine to turn over.

My question is, is this normal for i-Shift failure or do they usually fail gradually with problems giving you warning before complete failure?

What irks most is that I filled the petrol tank from 1/4 full to the brim the previous day!!!

Unless this is a simple matter of replacing an electrical fuse it looks like

The i-shift is notoriously difficult to get repaired these days

There is only one specialist I've seen recommended a few times but they are in Hounslow West London

Whilst advertised as ECU repairs they have repaired i-shifts

Is your battery okay? It can also be the result of low voltage that the I-shift software is disturbed. Not starting seems a logical result of a failing battery.

Thanks for the replies. I was aware of the place in Hounslow (not far from me) but as the car is immobile I would have to get the car moved by a specialist - not imposssible but not as convenient and cheap as driving there.

Hadn't thought of the battery condition as I replaced it not that long ago but now cannot find where I made of note of the date - will have a look and see if I can see a date code on the battery case. Probably best to take it out and put it on charge and see what happens.

Will come back on this either way (YeeeHaaa! it worked or Bother! or appropriate words when it doesn't).

Thanks for your suggestion regarding the battery, which appears to have been the problem and not something I thought was O.K.

I must have "misremembered" changing the battery a couple of years ago (must have been on one of my other vehicles) but the "eye indicator" on the top of the Jazz's battery was showing green for a good charge when in fact it was flat.

Took the battery out this morning and put it on charge for about three hours. Refitted it even though the charger had not reached fully charged indicator state and turned the key. BINGO! Engine turned and started. Put the gear lever in reverse and backed up about a couple of feet, stopped and selected drive and sucessfully pulled back to where I had originally parked. All the dash warnings have gone and the dash reads as normal without the warning (gear/exclamation mark) showing and the current mileage is correct.

Waiting for the road to clear of parked vehicles later today and will run the car down the road and then park in front of my garage and connect charger for an overnight charge.

Good to hear! A battery (or alternator?) is much cheaper and easier to fix than any i-shift part

Scrub all that. Appears not to be the battery.

Put the battery on charge and waited for the charger to show fully charged.

Car started and the best I could manage was about 100 yards!

At least I managed to get around the block and park outside my house.

Thought I should update this.

Left the battery disconnected for the day in the hope that the system would again reset itself, as previously, but no luck. The engine wouldn't start.

Borrowed a professional battery (load) tester which showed that the battery was O.K.

Looks that the clutch/gear shift mechanism is fried.
