Differences between Mk 2 and Mk3
« on: June 27, 2025, 05:42:30 PM »
I have a 2008 Mk 1, and now I have to get a newer Jazz. Looking at a few prices, I decided I could afford a 2015 car, but I see that sits right on the line between Mk 2 and Mk 3. I downloaded the very helpful and comprehensive posts by RichardA, showing features of each Mark, but what's the abbreviated version, as it were? How can I best tell at a glance which Mark a car is?

I prefer a manual gearbox, so am I safe in saying simply that if a Jazz has a 5-speed gearbox, it's a Mk 2, and 6-speed = Mk 3?

Incidentally, my current Jazz was made with a tilt/slide sunroof. I love it, but a dealer told me none of the more recent cars have them. I think that's a backward step, but what can you do?

You are right: mk2 is 5 speed, mk3 is 6 speed. Mk2 is more edgier or squarer, while Mk3 is more round. Also, the 1.2 disappeared, leaving only the 1.339 version for Mk3.

The mk2 in its most luxurious version does have a sunroof, but it cannot be opened. For the mk3 it was discontinued. However: aftermarket sunroofs could be fitted (which I would not prefer).

Both are nice to drive, reliable and fun. I would place miles and overall state above whether it’s mk2 or 3.

Good luck!

Many thanks. At least it's relatively simple.

hi bxc I'm on my 5th consecutive jazz I've had 2x mk1, 2x mk2, and now a mk3 that I've had for 1 month. as you can probably tell I LOVE THE JAZZ!! the mk2 was a pleasure to drive (had a S & SE) and this mk3 is the SE as well. however the MK3 SE has 6 speed, TPMS, cruise control, DAB radio, handsfree telephone & a plethora of driving warning sensors on it that I'm still getting my head around!! its an absolute pleasure to drive nonetheless. - hope that helps & happy jazzing (if thats even a thing)
DENY EVERYTHING BALDRICK!

For telling whether car us Mk2 (GE) or Mk3 (GK) you can always rely on VIN and the mentioned letters.

But when looking from further away the front lights are looking very different. In GE the front lights are very large and cover the whole front corner, and reach even near the lower corner of the windshield.

In GK the front lights are narrower and continue the shape of the front grille.

And when looking at the engine, GE is SOHC and GK is DOHC.

to change the spark plugs on the mk2 you need to remove the cowling and the wiper arms and motors, it is not as easy as the mk3 especially if you want to check for oil leaks down the plug tubes

but at least they both have magic seats which are a real help
