Best way to repair 1p coin sized windshield chip?

Hi everyone! I am a new driver and my Honda Jazz EX (22) is my first car. I have been driving it for almost 2 years now.

A tiny rock hit my windscreen when driving down the motorway. It has resulted in a very small but star shaped crack/chip on my windscreen (passenger’s side so it doesn’t invalidate MOT). It’s about the size of a 1p coin.

What’s the best way to get it repaired and how much does it usually cost?

I saw some at home repair kits but worried about doing it myself. Should I just go to a local repair garage?

I’m trying to avoid calling out Autoglass and do a claim via insurance because I’m a bit worried of it impacting my insurance rates as a new driver.

Would appreciate any advice!

Try Halfords. I don't know how much, but ours does a repair service...so would assume it is across their sites.

autoglass or similar also do small repairs, it should not impact on insurance, the longer you leave it the worse it may get.

I once took my Jazz to a local repair garage, due to a similar windshield chip. They repaired it very well, and the center of the chip is still slightly visible, but the star shaped cracks that were around it are not visible at all anymore. The price was around 50€, and my insurance paid for it.

The garage staff recommended that next time when I get a new chip, I should place a piece of transparent tape on the chip, to protect it from water and dirt, until I can take it to a repair garage. Maybe a good idea to do that first.

Best to read your insurance policy. Its very common for windscreen coverage to be underwritten by a specialist insurance company ,separate to the the main underwriter for the policy.   So there is a good chance it wouldnt affect your no claims bonus or future premiums.    Some will pay the entire cost if you have a chip repair , but may charge an excess for  full screen replacement.

If you do decide to pay   it yourself I would still consider  going to a windscreen specialist.   A DIY kit may not save you that much and your first  attempt might not be perfect.   Also the specialists have regular contact with various insurers  and may know  whether yours  would be covered without penalty. (take your certificate and policy documents with you)

I've had 2 repairs carried by Autoglass in the past and neither were as 'invisible' as they reckon

One was in the bottom left passenger side so not a problem as the old tax disc covered it but the second was in a similar position to yours and it was so obvious I got them to change the screen

How did the screen replacement go? Did it cost a lot? Is there a specific window spec that needs to be followed if it gets replaced?

Have a look on internet windscreen chip repairs local to you, on certain days of the week
they used to be in different supermarkets car parks, once had a stone hit me on M6 while
I was doing 80 mph bigger than a 1p I got it sorted in supermarket car park for about £25
they drilled it put liquid in under pressure then smoothed it with something like a razor blade
with special edge, had the car another ten years the chip just stayed the same, nearly forgot
I got on with the fella very well he said if you had gone to auto windscreens they wouldn't have
repaired it, he also gave me one of the so called razor blades as he said over the years the
liquid he put in would rise with vibration of car he was right but only used blade two or three
times , I met the right chap and went to Tesco on the right day and best of all nobody wanted
to shaft me.

The screen replacement, on a 8G Civic, was fine but they do have to get the correct screen with the camera cutouts depending on model

I had my Jazz windscreen replaced due to delamination (our dealer had done two other EX models too), and although it was replaced by an independent windscreen company, the camera and sensors had to be recalibrated back at the dealer.. and that took about two hours.
