First Long Journey

First long journey today in my Jazz

I’m in Suffolk for my father’s funeral, roughly 160 miles

So impressed how the Jazz behaved on the motorways. I sat at a pretty constant 70mph and she was quiet and very refined and has plenty of power for overtaking etc

Yes sorry for your loss Nina, lost both my parents when in my forties and the last of my wife’s a year ago I’m now in my mid seventies and love my Jazz, we drove to Frinton on Sea before Christmas from Hinckley in Leicestershire 340 miles in a day to see my wife’s brother who had been unwell, all dual carriageway and motorways at between 60 & 70 (plus a bit more overtaking  :) averaged over 70mpg so well impressed the Jazz is indeed an incredible car, looking forward to my next one in 10 months time  :D :D

@ninanina: I am truly sorry for your loss!

I do concur with you that the Jazz is truly an enjoyable car even on longer distance travels.

My travels to southern France are about 500 miles which are a pleasure with the Jazz!
I've never owned a car that is so relaxing as the Jazz. On these "endless" motorways the lane keeping assistant system LKAS comes in very handy. Together with adaptive cruise control ACC the car practically drives itself (please do not confuse LKAS with the infamous RDMS!).
Also the Jazz's air conditioning does a very good job at keeping cabin temperatures comfortable.

Fuel economy drops somewhat at higher speeds (in Switzerland the official speed limit on motorways is 120km/h (75mph) and in France even 130 km/h (81.something mph). However, with a bit of moderation and good nerves the journey can still be made without refuelling.
The strong nerves are necessary because the fuel gauge is too optimistic on the first half and too pessimistic on the second half of the tank turning to outright misleading on the last segment / "tenth"!
My longest trip without refueling so far was 735km (460miles) and the system almost drove me nuts with the constant nagging "refuel now" messages! Yet, I was only able to put in 31.7 L (out of 40) which means, I could have driven around 100 additional miles!

Thank you all for your very kind words, much appreciated

After funeral (short journey from hotel) today I checked tonight and app is showing over 70mpg, that at least made me smile!

Long drive back tomorrow but will break it up and have breakfast somewhere on the way home

What I find with long journeys, without regular breaks, is my lower thigh seems to develop mild cramp from inactivity

My old Lexus IS200 had full electric seats and it was very easy while driving to raise and lower the front seat squab to put pressure in different places that relieved and removed the cramp
Let's be careful out there !

Not sure how much is due to the seats, and how much is inactive legs when using cruise control. Even without ACC your right foot can be   relatively inactive on the accelerator pedal and  get cramps etc.     On long trips in light traffic  ACC allows me to do some gentle  leg and foot exercises.  Nothing so drastic it takes my feet, or attention ,so  far from the pedals that  I cannot   immediately take  over control if required.

On a similar vein (rather than deep vein thrombosis ;D )  I recently read an article that claimed   basic ,dumb, cruise control can increase accidents by 8%, while  active cruise control 'only ' increases them by 1.8 %  (IIRC) . But  Lane keeping assist (LKAS ) reduces them by 19.1%   (It didnt mention RDMS)
I think it may have dumbed  the statistics down a bit ,and possibly sensationalised by a journalist looking for a good story.   It probably only applies to those incidents that can be directly related to  such inattention on motorways.
LKAS can save you from inattentive lane wandering.  But cruise control  can tempt some drivers to be less attentive than they should be.  If you remain properly vigilant ,with ACC only as an aid ,  it can ,IMO still be a positive thing for road safety.

I only ever used cruise in Specs (average speed) zones to ensure I never accidentally overdid it

Tried it with the Jazz ACC and that was a complete disaster for me so experimented with LIM and that worked perfectly
Let's be careful out there !

Home safe and sound and the Jazz was a delight

It started raining the further south I got, the weather was filthy in places. Auto wipers worked perfectly; I wish the rear wiper was auto as well as it does tend to get quite dirty on very wet motorways, probably due to it being pretty upright

From what I can make out the auto headlights come on when your wipers are working hard not just when there’s a lack of light

Just checked the app and it shows approximately 65mpg for the journey home which I’m very happy with

When I wrote that the car "practically drives itself" I wasn't implying that I'm thus a reckless driver to actually fully rely on these assistants!

If understood and used at their intended purpose namely assistants they are quite helpful and let you concentrate more on the ever increasing and dense traffic and spend less time with "tedious" things like keeping a constant speed or staying smack in the middle of the lane.

Remember how comfortable it was no longer having to manually change gears or juggle with the hand brake when starting uphill? (or not having to bother with the infamous choke and pump once before turning the key...)

Technology has advanced by leaps and bounds! - We just have to remind ourselves that we mustn't let us get carried away by it!

This is exactly the same as me only difference is I had insignia not Lexus
it also had massage seats which helped.
I forgot what I came to forget.

In these circumstances you can set the rear wiper to intermittent to keep the window free of spray.

Ha yes the bygone age of motoring .. winter starts with a choke or a flooded engine several minutes later …
Any one take out spark plugs and heat them under the gas grill to help winter starts ….
Or that wait for diesel glow plugs to heat up ..
Stick on rear heater elements …
6k oil changes and drum brakes all round .. naturally you cant buy a Morris Minor any more but still some survive .and bring along that back to basics pleasures just as a fergie tractor does !

The joy of the MK1 Mini that when it rained heavily the distributor got flooded and cut out

The answer was a surgical rubber glove to pull over it with the spark plug leads coming out of the fingers

I’ve just double checked my oil and coolant levels after my long drive of approximately 400 miles

I’m happy to report that neither level has changed, not even by 1mm, from when I started the journey

It’s always a risk buying a used car even though my Jazz was supplied by a Honda dealer and was just over a year old when I purchased it

I’m extremely happy with my Jazz and the long journey was a breeze!
