Are the front seats wider on the Mk4 compared to a Mk3 .
I cant drive my MK 3  because of back pain after driving for a short time

I don't know if the width is different from the Mk3, I wouldn't have thought there would be much difference as the car widths are similar. There are 3 different seat designs on the mk4 as far as I'm aware, the default one used by most models, the Crosstar which has water-resistant material (this model is a bit wider and higher up so might suit you better), and the Sport model (which I currently have) which has 'leather' panels and I find very comfortable and supportive on long journeys. I had a Crosstar before this and that was comfortable too, but different from the Sport which has firmer suspension. I would suggest you try out all three before deciding on which model you'd like (note I have occasional back problems as well so would notice if any of the seats had issues).

The seats on my advance are quite dished ,ie bucket seats.  Very similar to the Ex but I dont know if its different on other trim levels.

Total width at widest ,including contoured  side cushioning   50cm  ,

Width of the flat lower bucket panel  where your bottom rests,  is 30 cm  widening to 40 cm towards the front where your thighs are .  The remaining width is tapered raised cushions that help to keep you in place when cornering.    The centre section up the backrest is also 30cm   plus  contoured side cushioning.

On my first long drive in my previous  brand new EX  I did find it a bit uncomfortable along the back of my thighs  compared to my old ,well used , Yaris. But soon found them comfortable even on long journeys .

I have no particular back problems and cant compare with a mk3 as I have never sat in one.

The partial proof of the pudding is actually sitting in a mk4 .
