Bought my Jazz from a non Honda dealership. Where do I stand?
« on: January 25, 2011, 09:10:24 PM »
After reading on this forum about gearbox problems etc with the Jazz has made me a bit anxious.
I bought my car from a Citroen dealership in November last year. The car is an '07 1.4 SE. It had 11,500 miles on it when bought and it was still within the Honda 3 yr warranty until the end of December 2010. I purchased a 1 yr warranty with the car, against my better judgement probably as I have no faith in these products normally.
I'm wondering where I would stand if I had, for example, gearbox problems with my car.
Would my local Honda dealer still have some obligation to look at the car and try to get Honda to pay for repairs? Or am I totally on my own from now on, having bought the car from a non Honda dealership?
I'm particularly interested because my old man is looking to buy a Jazz and maybe he should stick to Honda only dealers and avoid my mistake.

I think all Honda would be interested in would be the service history. If it's all with them, then I think you are as qualified as well as anyone re help with abnormal failures outside the 3 years.

I bought mine from a warehouse place, and saved prob £1500 on a Honda supplied similar car. That will more than pay for a reconditioned 'box in the unlikely event I need it.

Mine's a low miler (just 30K at 6 years) but I'm going to change the gearbox oil this spring as a just in case. No evidence of any 'box troubles on mine. If gearboxes are failing, the old boxes will be being rebuilt by specialists and offered as exchange units for a lot less than a Honda new one. Don't let it put you off. All cars have their probs - one thing with a Honda is a) they don't have many, b) they're not the breakdown-at-the-side-of-the-road type (cambelts, fuel pumps, dodgy electrics etc). You'll get a bit of warning.

For added piece of mind just pop along to your Citezens Advice - they will confirm you have a 6 months guarantee with vehicle purchased from any garage

If anything goes wrong and they are still within any extended warrenty then you should be ok. also where are you going to get car serviced as would help if at a honda dealer.

Thanks for the reassuring words. I didn't know about having 6 months cover as a consumer right. I'll look into that. I think the dealer said they do 30 days cover as standard , but it would seem reasonable that the vehicle must be "of merchatable quality' just like a fridge or TV. If it went seriously wrong after a few weeks that would not be very fair, given it cost me over £6k.
I've just today taken my old man to a local Honda dealer in Glasgow where he bought an '04 Jazz CVT from them. (He was impressed with mine). So , if I start taking my car there for servicing etc and he does too , we should build up a good working relationship with the dealership.
I think I'll renew the gearbox oil myself as a precaution. I did this with my previous cars. all Saabs, which have a reputation for prematurely failed 'boxes as well. (mind you I drove my old '86 Saab 9000 for 80k miles with a whining 5th gear that never got any worse)
The gearchange on the Jazz is sweet and slick at the moment.

If you change the gearbox oil yourself make sure you use Honda genuine oil/fliud. I have done a few boxes where the incorrect oil has been used.
