Removing tail lights
« on: October 05, 2024, 10:40:33 PM »
I am planning to get clear rear lights for my Jazz next month.

Does anyone know how to remove the half that goes on the boot door? Is it through the same little cover used to change the reversing bulbs?

No it won't do anything to the insurance. It can invalidate the warranty regarding the part itself but my car's warranty is ending next Feb

No it won't do anything to the insurance.

Have you checked that with your insurance company? If not, you might want to do so to cover yourself. They’re not usually very keen on anything they regard as a modification. Lights are governed by lots of complex rules and regulations, and it’d be easier for them to say “no” rather than expend effort examining your suggestion in detail to determine compliance.

Agreed. Its only takes a phonecall to check and make sure you will be insured so why not do it

I feel we are going off topic here.
My questions was if anyone has removed the bit that goes on the boot door, as I'm not sure if it's done from the little cover behind?

This can also be in case the tail light is damaged and needs replacing.

Thank you

This Amazon listing includes  a photo of the rear of the tailgate light which, I think ,shows the positioning  of the mounting bolts. (Although the picture is a bit fuzzy. )  If you remove one of your covers you may be able to see if you will be able to reach all of them.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Light-Taillight-Signal-Replacement-Right-Inside/dp/B0C9HYKQ5W

But  I agree with the others .I think this is a modification that should be declared to your insurance company. They may be very picky about whether it complies with lighting regulations.  And they can also be a bit illogical about how they think it affects the risk.   They may assume that a driver who modifies a car for aesthetic reasons is also more likely to drive 'enthusiastically'. Nonsense of course but  they also increase premiums based on postcode rather than driver ability or  history.

And dont forget to hang on to  the  original light units in case the mod needs to be reversed. Even attractive modifications  tend to reduce the valuation of a used car on the open market , unless you are able to sell directly to a fellow enthusiast .

That taillight is held on by 3 nuts, but I don't believe you can access all of them with just removing the bulb replacement cover, you need to remove the whole inner tailgate trim, which is just held on with push in clips, its just pulled off using the bulb replacement cover hole as a pulling method.

I can't get my head round the change

If you change the red plastic to clear will the LED's need changing to red and/or the indicator bulbs need changing to orange

Seems a lot of expense and work to maybe have light issues along the lines that ColinB stated
Let's be careful out there !

It's nothing special. Have a look on the Jazz GD and GE forums and Facebook groups you will see a lot of people swap the OEM rear lights for JDM ones. It can be LED ones, clear ones in the case of the GE Jazz etc. Very common swap.
The indicator bulbs are already orange and the LEDs are already red. I am just buying the clear version of the rear lights to swap.

as I understand it the only white lights on the rear of a car are the reversing lights - which ONLY come on when reversing - any other light, other than red, would be illegal.

Thanks, I was hoping it can be done just with through the small cover 🥲
Regarding insurance, that's off topic. Insurance has already been notified. Imagine people who change alloys or add a spoiler. Nothing special.
As I mentioned above the clear/JDM tail light swap is extremely common with Jazz GD and GE especially.
