Sill & fender panels gap
« on: July 01, 2024, 09:06:06 AM »
I recently noticed a gap between the fender and the sill panels. I am attaching photos of the gap on the front right side. Left side for reference. Damage, defect or design? Doesn't look normal.

Mine look very like yours on both sides .      I think it is designed that way so the front wing can be replaced without also disturbing  the underseal /anti chip coating  on the sill.   I have owned the car from new and know its never had repairs.

Thank you. Gives me peace of mind. You might be right about disassembly.

Wate draingage design?

Yes, it might be for ventilation.

Was your car assembled in the UK, looks reminiscent of Longbridge back in the day?

Mk 4's have never been assembled in the uk.  On my car , the front wing panel appears to be  deliberately  folded over double at the join, making it a removable panel rather than a flush  spot welded  join.  And the gap, also appears specially shaped and free of undersealant, so quite likely a water drain, as suggested by 5thcivic.

I might test it later with a watering can,  although according to my wife  my appointment at the dentist is more important  >:(
