D & B Mode on Advance Sport
« on: October 01, 2023, 12:37:00 PM »
Picked up my new Advance Sport on Friday. Really happy with it although the Honda+ app doesn't seem to want to connect (cant generate pin!).

I'm slightly baffled by the regenerative braking paddles by the steering wheel. When I am in D mode if I increase the resistance to the maximum level it feels very much like B mode. It kind of makes B mode redundant really. Although perhaps I am missing something? Would be interested if anyone else who finds the paddle feature useful, maybe I'm just doing it wrong.

I have paddles on the E and find them useless in town traffic where every acceleration returns to light paddle and more clicks all the time so find one pedal much better. On the motorway it might be different, but I still think that once you are used to the feel of one pedal it is easy not to flutter the pedal and keep a constant speed without tiny accels and brakes, and adjust speed to conditions smoothly and efficiently. You hardly need the brakes at all except sometimes for a complete stop. I would be interested in any reliable data that paddle mode is more efficient on the motorway but have not seen it yet.

Personally I would like the paddles: B mode brakes too hard for my liking, D sometimes isn’t enough, so I keep shifting from D to B and back. The paddles would allow me to stay in D almost always and gently increase braking using the paddles. It would also avoid the ‘clunck’ sound when going from B to D at standstill (from the lever itself).

I think that B mode triggers maximum braking possible, and that is similar to the maximum using paddles.

Use the paddles going downhill to stop the car running away.  Its a bit like dropping down a gear in a manual car to provide engine braking but in this case the retardation is increasing the amount of power going into the hybrid battery.

Sounds a complication?

I'd get in a flap with such complications  .I wonder  how many owners make full use of the facility. A bit of an affectation I think.  Flappy paddles for formula 1 type gear changing makes more sense.
My IQ test came back negative

On the upside: The paddles give the same decelaration/recuperation up to B-mode only with finer adjustment plus they allow cruise control (which is impossible in B-mode)

B mode cruise control a good thing.

I realise that this is all personal choice, but I would like the 'B' mode braking to be harder.
The effect can be reduced by using the accelerator.
I have no experience of paddles, but feel they would be annoying to the say the least, using them every time you slow down  ;D

I always drive in B mode, except when ACC forces me to D.

Surely this addition of paddles is a gimmick added to the Advance Sport, trying to look like the gear selectors replicated on the 'supercar' models. Constantly having to paddle your way to different levels of breaking... only having to reset it every time too! I find nothing wrong with the 'older' method. I drive in B around town and the occasional winding B road which are prevalent in my area, and D mode on straight and speedier roads. Easy.

I tried using B all the time but found with D the economy was if anything better and it means using the brakes occasionally which helps to keep the disks free of rust. I still use B for a long downhill stretch but that's all.

I have been a bit reckless today. Very slow German HGV in front of me. Came to lights, took the outside lane, switched off ECON, switched into D mode and floored it. The 0-30 time is seriously impressive.

Sorry - not really relevant.

...Why would switching to D help?
