Those 'snowflake' plastic wheel covers*
« on: January 03, 2023, 02:54:39 PM »
I'm contemplating purchase of a Mk4 EX model. Can anyone please tell me the approx cost of replacing just one of those covers in the event I kerbed it? Presumably cheaper than the average price of restoring a damaged alloy, £40.00 via local garage, correct or incorrect?

Also, if i did find it necessary to replace, are they easily removable and would i simply clip/push it into place or must the task necessarily be done by a professional at the dealership?

*When I enquired at a Honda dealer they couldn't price my query as I obviously can't provide reg details at present... Incidentally, are alternative colours to the stardard white available and roughly what would a set of 4 cost?

Be prepared for a shock! I don't recall the exact details but someone here posted the cost of those trims; it was ludicrously expensive.

... You'll probably need to take the wheel off to remove the trims. They don't just clip on. I just removed mine altogether, I like the look without them.
Apparently they are expensive to replace, they don't really 100% stop you from damaging the wheel itself and don't add to the looks I don't think.

There are already threads about them...

I think you need to remove the wheel  first then they can be unclipped fairly easily..   This at least means they are protected from theft by the locking wheel nuts.  Just as well at the price they are.   You do sometimes see used ones offered on ebay a bit cheaper.

It may sound ridiculous  repairing plastic  hub caps  but if they get scuffed  it may be cheaper to get them repaired with flexible bumper filler  and resprayed rather than buying a new one.    They are silver not white.
Or as others have done, run them without caps until just before the car is sold.   They are unique. I dont know of any after market alternative caps that will fit.

Even more ridiculous, I have currently got after market alloy wheels s fitted to my EX  which only cost me about £60 each brand new.(calculated  by deducting the cost of the  tyres alone from what I paid for a ready fitted tyre/wheel package . I got  a bargain. They would probably now cost at least £100 -£120 each)  My original Honda wheels ,tyres and windmill caps are in my garage, safe and sound. They are not for sale  ;D )
Dont let the  hubcaps issue put you off the mk4 . Most owners love the car.    And you would be equally livid and out of pocket if you kerb damage  the diamond cut alloys fitted to many cars these days

I will fix that dripping tap.  No need to keep reminding me every 3 months.

I find it hard to justify that price. Especially as you can get similar trims, obviously not Jazz compatible, for a fraction of that price.

Honda do have some crazy prices.

On the 8G Civic there are 4 bolts holding the centre console in place. They are hidden by 4 tiny, 20p size, black plastic covers. They are, or were, £8 each.
Let's be careful out there !

I hate the stupidly expensive and nasty plastic wheel trims on my Mk4.

It's not too difficult to remove them.   Without plastic cover they look like:

The first time I saw the new mk.4 range when I was picking up my used mk.3 from the dealership, my first thought was that Honda shouldn't have given an 8yr old some crayons and gone with their drawing of wheel trims.
I'm sure the mk.4 is an excellent product (otherwise) and I might well have one in future ........ but those wheel trims!
