Rear seat belt warning display

Has anyone got any ideas why the rear seat belt warning display appears and stays on when the rear seats are not occupied.  Even though when checking it out and connecting all 3 rear seat belts the warning still appears.  The car was serviced 2 weeks ago but the warning light only started appearing 2 days ago.

From memory, I think this message appears on the multi-function display (right hand dial in front of the driver) when the engine's initially started and you drive off, but then goes off after a few seconds so the display reverts to whatever you've got it set to show. If yours stays on permanently, then there's something interfering with it. Couple of ideas:
Do you have something heavy on the rear seat (dog?) that makes the car think there's someone sitting there?
The handbook says the warning will come on if one of the rear doors is opened or closed ... so is it possible that one of those isn't fully closed, or maybe there's a problem with the sensor (does the interior light come on when the door is opened, do you get the "Door open" warning on the dashboard)?

Many thanks for taking the time to try and help.  Definitely nothing on the back seats.  All the other sensors work, the interior light, door open etc, driver seat belt etc.  I’ve tried bringing the seat backs forward and then making sure they return correctly.  I’ve checked the rear doors are closed and the boot.  There is no door open warning indicator appearing other than the driver door which disappears when the door is closed.
Annoying though it is, it doesn’t hinder my driving.

The warning should go if you connect the belts, so there’s something wrong with yours.

I would start the car, get in the back seat, put a belt on and see if the warning goes off?

Also in the display, you can chose to turn the warnings off, I wonder if the dealer had to disconnect the battery and it reset to default, maybe you had it turned off before.

Thanks for trying to help.  I tried sitting in a back seat and connecting the seat belt but no change.  I also reset the factory settings which didn’t work either.  I may just have to live with it for the time being.

Unlike the front seats I dont think the back seats have sensors that detect whether someone is sitting in them.  Too many false alarms if passengers  lounge over more than one space , bags put on seats, manic pets  etc.

I think it assumes the driver will now how many passengers are in the back  and merely shows which seat belts are buckled and whether any are unbuckled en route. Possibly taking into account door opening.

But I cant explain why yours seems to have gremlins.         If you can locate and trace the wiring loom leading to the rear seat belt buckles  you could check for any obvious physical damage or any electrical connectors loose or disconnected.

Thanks for the advice.  I may go back to the garage that serviced/MOTd it a couple of weeks ago, see if they can shed any light on it.  Long shot though!

Ah. you mentioned MOT.  They do tend to fiddle about with all three rear seat belt buckles and stuff on the mot.  And if there was  a dashboard display, or magic seats  they didnt fully understand , could have fiddled  with settings and things they shouldnt have.      Within the limits of politeness and fairness I'd be inclined to suggest to them they caused the problem.

Mine does this from time to time, somewhat sporadically. I have absolutely no idea why. Makes no difference whether the rear seatbelts are fastened or not. Sometimes it goes away on its own. Other times I have to flick the Multi-Information Display up/down function selectors on the steering wheel to get rid of it.

So its possible the problem could be related to this  and maybe the system has got confused if Kathy , or the mot tester,
was testing the results of connecting and disconnecting the belts  while standing outside the car with the door open .

If you havnt already done so see what happens if someone actually gets into the back, connects the belt whilst the door is shut ,and maybe go for a drive.

Have just realised that it’s possible to set up the multi-function display so that it shows the rear seat belt monitor permanently. Have a look at the section in the handbook titled “Multi-Information Display”. It’s around page 121 in the online version...

...  (may be slightly different in your hard copy). You cycle through the various display options using the up/down arrow buttons on the lower right of the steering wheel. Maybe this got adjusted accidentally when the car was serviced.

I've noticed this display on odd occasions, it has always gone away but I haven't worked out what exactly had prompted it. Monkeydave's comment may well be what has triggered it in my car, I've never yet carried a rear passenger but occasionally open the rear doors for various reasons, that might well be it.
Technology eh? Don't you just love it?
