CVT oil change
« on: January 26, 2022, 11:22:45 AM »
I have decided to keep my MK3 and its has gone in for its 6th service today. Its only done 3000 miles in the last 2 years but they want to change the CVT oil even though it was done on the 4th service. Is this necessary?
I can understand its worth changing the engine oil even though the mileage is low but is it necessary to change the CVT oil.

3,000 miles in two years; your engine oil and CVT fluid hasn’t hardly been used.   Maybe a engine oil service at most to preserve Service History certainly not an CVT fluid change, waste of money.

The Honda stipulated CVT oil change intervals are 25K miles or two years whichever is soonest, the decision is yours. I could never understand the 'two year' bit either, it's not like engine oil.

And of course they wanted to add "air conditioning service " and "oil & fuel treatment" as well. Also they dont use Honda oil

My 2019 JDM Mk3 is going for its first MOT (or shaken as it is known here) and 3 year service. I've done about 21,000 km. The service schedule in Japanese just says 40,000 km for CVT fluid.  No mention of mention 2 years - just 40,000 km. My garage (not a Honda dealer) quoted me £86 to do it. I agreed to get it done as CVTs are very expensive if they go wrong and the summer temperature here is pretty high so fluids do deteriorate. I have no idea why Honda in Japan don't think it is necessary after 2 years (or even 3 in my case) but is necessary in the UK. The garages love changing the brake fluid and engine oil much more often than needed - all grist for the mill. Since they offered to do the brakes for only £20, I agreed as I suppose you can't be too careful with brakes. They claim local conditions can cause water condesate to accumulate in the fluid which can then vaporise under heavy use going down one of the local mountains. An engine air filter costs about the same and I suppose that is worth getting given the cost of fuel. It is sometimes quite dusty here thanks to the Gobi desert and China's polluting industry.

With the MOT it will cost about £470 in total which feels reasonable considering the MOT is for two years and it includes two years of minimum legal insurance. The stories about how expensive shaken is and how a car can fail for having a scratch on the headlight are nonsense.

i have a manual but i have heared that the cvt must always have honda oil and even independant mechanics say this, for a main dealer not to use oem oil is not good

I have a 2019 cvt which had its 2 year service last September. With it still being under warranty it was done at a Honda dealership  and they changed the gearbox oil even though it had done less than 2000 miles.

This is mentioned too in my service manual BUT under the section for heavy use. For normal use the intervals are longer. Haven't really figured out how long, though I read somewhere between 50k and 100k miles, but I have a 2011 jazz with 102k km on the clock and till date the oil hasn't been changed.

My 2012 CVT Jazz is 12 years old with 61k miles. I change CVT at 20k mile intervals: every 4 years.
I have owned it since 2012  (300 miles used) : first 5 years Honda service.
CVT works as it did when I bought it.

I bought my 2018 at 2 yrs old and 1500 miles (one little old lady owner etc). I had one service done a year later just to "buy" some reassurance of warranty etc.
I intend to keep the car so from year 4 onwards I have serviced it myself. FWIW I use Honda 0W20 engine oil and filters, but each to their own on this.
I wrangled with the CVT oil change question. Even at 4 yrs it had only done 8k miles. I decided to change the oil using a simple drain/refill process, not the double "flush" type change which some sources suggest which would more or less double the cost. I work on the basis that if the oil is basically still good, then changing "most" of it will keep it perfectly serviceable even if some of the old stuff remains. I intend to do this every 2 years, working on the principle that the cost (even for Honda's own HCF2 oil !!) is relatively small compared to all the other running costs.
I use the same principle for brake fluid and coolant, change it using the simple method so most of it is renewed and do it reasonably regularly such that the amount of old stuff in the system is always kept to a low level. This works well with coolant since most of the reason to change it is because the corrosion inhibitor pack gets used up, so renewing most of the coolant gets the protection levels back without all the hassle of flushing and draining heater circuits etc.
Just a note to anyone doing the CVT oil themselves. I watched some youtube stuff, some folk use an oil pump/syringe to fill the transmission from underneath. One chap showed that removing the airbox and an odd hose or 2 allows you access to the filler plug on the top, which makes filling very much easier. That was the method I used. I found it wasn't actually necessary to detach the small hoses/pipes he showed (possibly throttle body heater pipes, can't remember), they could simply (just) be moved aside enough. Search youtube.
Essential tip, make sure you can get the filler and level plugs out BEFORE you drain the oil.

A lot of info. about the CVT on the Mk.3 Jazz Haynes online manual.

They reckon to renew the fluid every 25000 miles / 24 months.

Also , if doing a diy job , the torques are 44 Nm for the filler and 49 Nm for the drain plug , and new washers are recommended.
