Heater and MPG

Has anyone noticed a drop in mpg while using the heater, more so than the air con.?

I haven't but that's because I always have the Climate Control on auto (except for very rare occasions). One thing I am interested in is whether using the heated seats and steering wheel and turning the temperature control down from 21 degrees to, say, 18 degrees will save fuel. I mentioned this in another thread but my Nissan Leaf owning pal gets a measurable increase in range by using his heated seats and dialling back the heating.

Would you swop your Jazz for your mates Nissan Leaf ?
It will be alright in the end, if it's not alright then it's not the end !

Automatic climate control stealing fuel
Both when hot and cold outside
I prefer to use it manually with minimal marching from outside temperature
When outside is sunny day and +30 or more i setting A/C to 28,5 degrees Celsius with minimum blower speed, when outside coold (+10 -to +17)and distance is less then 15km I prefer not to use heater at all.

One thing I was expecting was the heater to not kick in as fast as my ICE Civic, but, I'm finding the heater kicking in quite fast.

On Sunday morning, 8C outside, I reckon it was blowing warm in less than half a mile. :)
Let's be careful out there !

NO! - it's using fuel to provide heat.  Did you not do science at school?

The AC compressor puts a load on the engine and therefore detracts very slightly from the fuel consumption. It matters not whether the AC is in manual or auto the temperature change is achieved by mixing hot and cold air which is set by the temperature control.

I think that term auto setting stealing is accurate.
You set the temp at say 21C and it stays at that. Just like an office block.
So in winter the engine needs to run almost const to provide heat, and likewise in summer to power a/c.
It is more than just the extra load of the aircon, as in traffic the engine needs to run much more.
Eco mode ameliorates engine use by allowing for delta in actual - desired temps.
But manual use of fan means you get your initial blast of heat / chill, then you live with it being hotter or colder.
Most cars now have touch controls and so temp is set once and left.I
Turning can off or low is key for economy.

I am astonished at roman's blase comment of when above 30C. Our local tv done a feature when it hit 31C this summer.
my Focus needs heat on full blast on hot days to stop it overheating on hills.

The hybrid battery also needs the air conditioning to cool it via the interior vent in the back seat.

Likely it also needs heat in the winter to warm it up as cold batteries aren’t very effective.

Possibly not as charging, which happens quite often given the small battery size, will generate some heat.

I managed to find some details from an insight owner that should also apply to the Jazz:

When the battery is cold it won't charge as quickly. Also brake regen won't be as strong to protect battery health.

Also, I doubt we will see -28C in the UK, but if we did the car won't actually let you drive it until the batteries have been warmed up by the cabin heater.

Does the Hybrid have automatic radiator vanes to aid heat up?
