Bonnet q
« on: September 13, 2021, 10:34:27 PM »
Forgive the question.  Closing bonnet on the mk4.
I am used to longer heavy bonnets that just drop last  6" to lock, or a just light press down.
Jazz's bonnet is short and light and with me just bounces back up. As latch is set back from edge pressing down feels wrong.
Is there a Jazz technique ?
The front sealing gasket is fully compressed to latch, it feels almost needs adjusted by 1 or two mm.

I had the same. Needed some height to close it and the inside lever had more resistance than I'd like.

There are 3 bolts that hold the bonnet catch. I raised mine by just over 1/8" and it now closes from the published 1'

I checked the shut line and it's still flush.
Let's be careful out there !

My Crosstar's bonnet latch seems to have loosened up a bit with time. The bonnet originally needed to be dropped by 1/2m or so to get it to latch.
Previously 2025 Jazz Advance, previously 2022 HR-V Elegance, previously 2020 Jazz Crosstar

My bonnet was very stiff at first, I didn’t think I’d be able to get it closed the first time.

It’s loosened a bit but still needs a good drop from 12” otherwise it doesn’t lock and you can’t just push it the final click.

When you look how high tech cars are now I'm surprised they haven't improved the bonnet lock.
Every car I have owned has required you to close the bonnet by dropping it from height, all seems a bit agricultural to me.
You can't just lower it and press the bonnet shut without the risk of deforming the sheet metal.
It will be alright in the end, if it's not alright then it's not the end !

Mine is the same. Needs to be dropped from at least 18 inches. I have never liked to do that but that is the only way to get it to close.

Well, I am glad it’s not just me! Since taking ownership of my Jazz two months ago, I was surprised how high I had to drop the bonnet to get it to close and was wondering if it was out of adjustment. So different from my previous (not Honda) cars.
Somewhere on this forum there was a link to a YouTube video of a guy extolling the virtues of the new Jazz and I noticed that he opened the bonnet to show the engine compartment but when closing, used his hands to push down the last couple of inches to get it to close.

Erm, no, see above, I adjusted mine in a few minutes. Now closes far easier.

Mine was the same, as I was going back to the dealer I purchased it from later the same week to collect the spare wheel I asked them to adjust the bonnet only to be told by the mechanic that there was no adjustment. Got the socket set out myself when I got home and adjusted it in five min.

Hello could you please advise which nut needs to be adjusted? I opened the bonnet on my wife's Crossbar this morning and was surprised it didn't lock from a foot drop. I had to almost take to the full open position and let it drop to get it to latch.
Many thanks

If you look closely at the mechanism that is attached to the under bonnet lever you reach in to open the bonnet.

That whole mechanism has 3 bolts that point towards the front. (Mine isn't a Crosstar)

Just loosen them a fraction so you can force the whole thing up a small amount. On mine there are 3 horizontal lines stamped into the panel to help with alignment amount.

If you're still unsure, I'll be home Sunday and I'll engineer a useful photo.

I've managed to adapt my closing technique to get mine to close - holding about 12-18" open with just a hint of downward pressure when you drop it. It seems to close first time then.

Annoyingly, I took mine back to the dealer to be adjusted but after being warmed up from a motorway journey it shut ok when there.

3 off 10mm hex head screws. On the lower latching part ( not the bonnet)
Use a ratchet  1/4 with 10'mm socket, but a ring spanner would also fit
Just loosen enough that It can move.maybe 1/2 turn. Don't remove the screws.
Easy access, nothing comes loose.
There are stamped lines for guidance and it only moves about 3 mm anyway.
Use a black marker to draw around the latch and so you can judge how much it moved.
Only needs to moved about 1mm to make a difference.
If too loose, it will still lock and latch ok, but there is movement of you press down on bonnet.

2 mins to adjust and you'll be able to drop the bonnet from 150-200mm and latch.

As promised, a picture speaks a thousand words.

As a few of us have found the manual statement that a drop from about a foot is sufficient ......... isn't !

Here are the 3 bolts that needs loosening, slightly. Just enough to allow some movement :

To assist with the movement there are some notches on both sides :

Then, of course, don't forget to re-tighten.
